<p>The NFL fined Los Angeles Rams wide receiver Puka Nacua $25,000 for his comments about officiating, a source told <a href="https://x.com/MikeGarafolo/status/2002101522302448007?s=20">NFL Network's Mike Garafolo</a> on Friday.</p><p>Nacua criticized NFL officials earlier this week while appearing on a livestream with streamers N3on and Adin Ross.</p><p>"The refs are the worst," Nacua <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G3ZqfbH-l4Q&amp;t=358s">said</a>. "These guys are lawyers. They want to be on TV too. You don't think he's texting his friends in the group chat like, 'Yo, you guys just saw me on Sunday Night Football. That wasn't P.I. (pass interference), but I called it.'"</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>Nacua also publicly <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///news/3431172" href="https://thescore.com/news/3431172">apologized</a> before Thursday's game for performing a gesture that was "antisemitic in nature" on the livestream. The NFL subsequently issued a statement condemning antisemitism that didn't name him specifically.</p><p>The Rams receiver continued to slam referees after Thursday night's overtime loss to the Seattle Seahawks. Nacua, who had a career-high 225 receiving yards on 12 catches, posted and subsequently deleted a tweet that appeared to address the officiating in the game minutes after the contest ended.</p><figure class="article-segment--embed"><blockquote class="twitter-tweet">

"Just frustration."</p><p>While it's unclear if Nacua was upset about a specific call, there were a number of controversial rulings - including an <a href="https://x.com/awfulannouncing/status/2001833207583641878?s=20">offensive penalty</a> against the Rams on the 1-yard line that took a touchdown off the board.</p><p>However, the call that garnered the majority of the attention involved a review that ended up supplying the points to send the contest to overtime.</p><p>The Seahawks' 16-point fourth-quarter comeback looked to be two points short after a conversion attempt appeared to be an incomplete pass. The teams were lining up for the ensuing kickoff when the officiating crew announced a review. That review eventually determined the pass went backward, making it a live ball that was recovered in the end zone by the Seahawks.</p><figure class="article-segment--embed"><blockquote class="twitter-tweet">

Nacua scored in overtime to give the Rams the lead, but the Seahawks drove the length of the field for a matching touchdown before winning on another two-point conversion.</p><p>Head coach Sean McVay admitted he'd never experienced a similar play.</p><p>"I've never quite seen anything like what happened on the 2-point conversion where you are lined up to kick off, then they say it's a fumble because they had a clear and obvious recovery," McVay told reporters afterward. "Very interesting, didn't get a clear explanation of everything that went on just because of some of the timing of it. ... I've never seen anything - or never been a part of anything - like that, and I've grown up around this game."</p><p>McVay was also asked about Nacua's deleted post, but did not want to offer an opinion since he had yet to see it for himself. However, the veteran coach did voice his support for the receiver.</p>

<p>Will Muschamp is returning to Texas as defensive coordinator, the program announced Thursday.</p><p>Muschamp replaces defensive coordinator Pete Kwiatkowski, who was dismissed Thursday after five seasons. Defensive passing game coordinator Duane Akina was also let go.</p><p>Head coach Steve Sarkisian said the Longhorns "felt it was best for our program to move in a different direction."</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>"Having the opportunity to hire Will Muschamp provides us the leadership to take our defense to another level," Sarkisian said in a statement.</p><p>He added: "His defenses are relentless; he absolutely gets the best out of his staff and players and is such an extremely well-respected coach. I know Longhorn Nation knows him well, he led some incredible defenses here on the Forty, and I'm so fired up to be bringing him back to Texas."</p><p>Muschamp served as Texas' defensive coordinator from 2008 through 2010. His best unit was the 2009 squad, which allowed 16.7 points per game.</p><p>He left Texas to become head coach at Florida following the 2010 campaign. He put up a 28-21 record at Florida over four years before stepping down. He returned to head coaching in 2016 with South Carolina and posted a 28-30 record over five seasons there.</p><p>He most recently served as a defensive analyst at Georgia.</p><p>The Longhorns allowed 19.8 points per game this season after surrendering 15.3 last year.</p>

<p>The Indianapolis Colts are opening the practice window for quarterback <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nfl/players/188125" href="https://thescore.com/nfl/players/188125">Anthony Richardson</a>, head coach Shane Steichen said Thursday, according to <a href="https://x.com/RapSheet/status/2001693162344231326?s=20">NFL Network's Ian Rapoport</a>.</p><p>This gives the Colts a 21-day window to activate Richardson from injured reserve. Richardson has been sidelined since October after undergoing surgery to repair a broken orbital bone socket.</p><p>Steichen added that Richardson is still dealing with some vision limitations, per Rapoport.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>The Colts have been searching for answers under center since losing starter <a href="https://thescore.com/nfl/players/97984">Daniel Jones</a> to a torn Achilles in Week 14. The franchise lured 44-year-old passer <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nfl/players/1955" href="https://thescore.com/nfl/players/1955">Philip Rivers</a> out of retirement to start last Sunday's loss to the Seattle Seahawks. Rivers, who had been retired for four-plus seasons, completed 18 of his 27 passes for 120 yards. He also threw a touchdown and an interception.</p><p>Rookie <a href="https://thescore.com/nfl/players/210166">Riley Leonard</a> served as Rivers' backup. </p><p>The fourth overall pick in the 2023 draft, Richardson has struggled since coming into the NFL. Plagued by injuries and inconsistent play, the former first-round pick has started just 15 games, throwing for 11 touchdowns to 13 interceptions while completing just a tick over half his passes (50.6%). He lost the starting job to Jones ahead of the 2025 season.</p><p>The Colts, who have lost four in a row and five of the last six, are 8-6 and on the outside of the playoff picture. They take on the 10-4 San Francisco 49ers on Monday night.</p>

<p>Big 12 commissioner Brett Yormark came to the ACC's defense, describing Notre Dame athletic director Pete Bevacqua's comments and behavior toward the conference as "egregious."</p><p>Bevacqua <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///news/3422337" href="https://thescore.com/news/3422337">criticized</a> the ACC earlier this week after Notre Dame was snubbed in favor of Miami for the College Football Playoff, saying the conference caused "permanent damage" to its relationship with the Fighting Irish and accusing it of "taking shots" at the program.</p><p>Notre Dame is independent in college football, but the school's other 24 sports are members of the ACC. Yormark called Bevacqua's response "totally out of bounds" and referenced the school's 10-game ACC schedule during the COVID season in 2020 as proof of the conference's past support.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>"I think Pete's, his behavior has been egregious," Yormark said Tuesday. "It's been egregious going after (ACC commissioner) Jim Phillips, when they saved Notre Dame during COVID."</p><p>CFP chair Hunter Yurachek explained Sunday that BYU's loss in the Big 12 title game led the committee to put Miami ahead of Notre Dame based on its Week 1 head-to-head win over the Fighting Irish.</p><p>"BYU lost," Yormark said. "(Notre Dame and Miami) became closer together, head-to-head made a difference in that decision."</p><p>Notre Dame opted out of playing in a bowl game after being left out of the CFP. The Fighting Irish appeared inside the 12-team playoff in every CFP rankings this season except the final one.</p>

<p>Max Verstappen didn't walk away from this season as a five-time world champion, but he left with an even bigger legacy, his mystique reaching a height only a few have ever hit before.</p><p>Although he fell two points shy of reversing a historic 104-point deficit and extending his four-year title run, Verstappen's relentless comeback attempt sent a wave of anxiety through the McLaren base. CEO Zak Brown gave a glimpse into the team's unease, likening the Dutch driver to a horror-movie character who wouldn't go away.</p><p>In 2025, Verstappen became Formula 1's boogeyman.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>And he had no issue embracing the persona, calling himself "Chucky."</p><p>McLaren, appearing to be plagued by paranoia, was constantly looking over its shoulder, chasing every suspicion of Verstappen's presence. Like viewers watching a scary movie, fans could only yell at their screens as the protagonist walked into traps. As Verstappen closed in, McLaren's mistakes piled up, culminating in the outfit throwing away valuable points in Las Vegas and Qatar.</p><p>All of this pushed Verstappen into a form the paddock hadn't seen since 2023 - only this time, he was the hunter instead of the hunted. He shrank a seemingly insurmountable 104-point deficit after Zandvoort to just 12 entering Abu Dhabi. When the checkered flag waved Sunday, Verstappen was two points short of a fifth world title.</p><p>It doesn't feel as if Verstappen lost the championship because he wasn't good enough. While McLaren managed to lead three races from start to finish - whether through one driver's dominance or a shared effort - Verstappen accomplished the feat four times on his own. This isn't an argument over whether the 28-year-old deserves to be champion over his rivals. That's not how it works. The driver with the most points earns the title. But there's no question Verstappen would have made a worthy champ had it gone his way.</p><p>The improbability of Verstappen's comeback risks getting lost among the final point tally. Only months earlier, speculation swirled regarding Mercedes courting him for a 2026 move. Meanwhile, Red Bull had parted with the only team principal it had ever known, Christian Horner, and replaced him with Laurent Mekies. Verstappen also entered the summer break saying he didn't think he'd win again after a disastrous weekend in Hungary.</p><p>For most of the season, the hope of a title challenge didn't exist in anyone's imagination except McLaren's. The team warned the world that the boogeyman could return. Of the now 35 titleholders in F1 history, only a few could have done what Verstappen did this season.</p>

<p>Lando Norris didn't secure his first world championship by dominating the field or with a flashy performance. Instead, he finished third in Sunday's race to clinch, winning the title in the way he knows best - through resiliency.</p><p>And Norris made sure to prove the critics, and perhaps even himself, wrong along the way, too.</p><p>No driver has arguably faced more negative labels than Norris. Though narratives can sometimes stubbornly persist, Norris - once mocked for his inability to handle pressure - reclaimed control of a story that culminated in a drivers' championship.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>For most of the season, it appeared the title would go to Norris' McLaren teammate. Ultimately, he prevailed because he handled adversity better than Oscar Piastri, who had been lauded earlier this year for his composure and ice-cold demeanor.</p><p>However, Norris was the one who finished with fewer wounds in a 24-race war of attrition, as the British driver avoided what the other contenders couldn't. While Piastri's season unraveled after Baku and Max Verstappen succumbed to frustration in Barcelona, Norris maintained his poise and dodged similar downfalls.</p><p>Yet, throughout the season, Norris faced situations that could've reinforced the same old narratives about his inability to deliver.</p><p>Despite a brilliantly controlled victory in the season opener in Melbourne, Norris struggled to adapt to the MCL39 in the early portions of the campaign. Costly mistakes in Shanghai, Jeddah, and Montreal left him 22 points back in the drivers' championship following the Canadian Grand Prix. Just as the past labels threatened to define him, Norris refused to stay down.</p><figure class="article-segment--embed"><blockquote class="twitter-tweet">

The Red Bull driver deserves full credit for his unprecedented late-season charge, but what he did shouldn't take away from the significance of Norris' triumph. After all, Verstappen played a major part in Norris' growth. </p><p>Like any compelling protagonist, Norris' championship arc began with disappointment. Midway through 2024, he was thrust into the role of title contender, largely because the sport yearned to see Verstappen and Red Bull finally toppled. Inserted into a title fight that few, Norris included, anticipated, he faced instant expectations to deliver at the level of a polished Verstappen.</p><p>He fell flat on his face. </p><p>Norris' defeat in 2024, when he was thoroughly outclassed by the veteran Verstappen, led to a pivotal shift in his mindset and preparation. Known for being overly harsh on himself, Norris explained how rewiring his approach to difficult days turned him into a better driver.</p><p>"I'm not always more positive, but I'm more positive and less negative about when I have bad days and bad sessions, and I believe in myself a bit more that I can turn it around," Norris said at the Las Vegas Grand Prix. "There've been a lot of races this year when I'm like, I get post-qualifying even, and I'm a bit lost. Especially at the beginning of the year, just off the pace, don't have an answer, don't have a clear, 'OK, tomorrow I need to do this, and I'll be fine.'</p><p>"But then I turn it around, and I turn it around either into qualifying from practice, or I turn it around on Sunday. I've done that a good amount of times, where I got to a point where even if I have a bad weekend now, I'm like, 'Well, I've done it before against all the best drivers. I've been off, and I turned it around come the time it matters.' That's a very reassuring feeling that I need."</p><p>The evidence of that new mindset was apparent. Although Norris still produced peaks - like the stunning pole laps in Monaco and Austria or the dominant win in Mexico - it was the unexpected wins that set his season apart. In Hungary, Norris turned a poor start into victory by switching strategies. In Brazil, he finished first in every session, while the rest of the grid was getting tangled with each other.</p><figure class="article-segment--embed"><blockquote class="twitter-tweet">

The dominant eras of Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton have partially fuelled that belief. But it's easy to forget the patience and growth that even the best drivers need. Hamilton fell short at his first shot as a rookie and claimed his first title in a dramatic last-lap overtake. Verstappen honed his craft for years, learning the value of consistency before taking the fight to Mercedes - and even then, his maiden championship came under a cloud of controversy.</p><p>Norris may not have dominated like Verstappen and Hamilton typically did, but without the points lost to circumstances beyond his control in the Netherlands and Las Vegas, the drivers' championship might have been decided well before Abu Dhabi. Aside from those setbacks, Norris delivered a remarkable campaign, becoming the second driver ever to reach 18-plus podiums in a season. Not too shabby.</p><p>For the first time in a long time, a driver shattered all the narratives applied to him, proving that it's never too late to make your own story. But for as much pain as those past failures caused, Norris isn't where he is now without them. That version of himself in 2024 doesn't win this title fight. And the Norris of 2025 doesn't do it without all the shortcomings molding him into a finished product worthy of being called a world champion.</p>

<p>Indianapolis Colts quarterback <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nfl/players/97984" href="https://thescore.com/nfl/players/97984">Daniel Jones</a> will undergo surgery on a torn Achilles suffered in Sunday's 36-19 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars, <a href="https://x.com/AdamSchefter/status/1997838230520201561">ESPN's Adam Schefter</a> reports.</p><p>Jones went to the ground on a noncontact play following a pass attempt toward the end of the first quarter. He immediately grabbed at the back of his right ankle. He then slammed his helmet into the ground as the Colts' medical staff assessed him.</p><p>Head coach Shane Steichen feared the worst postgame, telling reporters the initial prognosis on Jones' injury could be season-ending.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>Jones was already playing through a fibula fracture in his left leg prior to the Achilles injury. </p><p>The former first-round pick was thriving in his first season with the Colts. He started the season with an 8-2 record before dropping his last three starts, including the loss to Jacksonville. He had completed a career-high 67.9% of his passes entering Sunday with 19 touchdowns to seven interceptions.</p><p><a href="https://thescore.com/nfl/players/210166">Riley Leonard</a> is the only healthy quarterback on the Colts' roster. He finished Sunday's game with 18 completions on 29 attempts for 145 yards and an interception. A sixth-round pick in 2025, Leonard had thrown only two NFL pass attempts before Sunday.</p><p>Indianapolis also has quarterback <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nfl/players/93784" href="https://thescore.com/nfl/players/93784">Brett Rypien</a> on its practice squad.</p><p><a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nfl/players/188125" href="https://thescore.com/nfl/players/188125">Anthony Richardson</a> would have been Jones' backup, but he remains on injured reserve due to a fractured orbital bone.
