<p>Tom Brady is now part owner of the Las Vegas Raiders, but he was nearly the franchise's quarterback in 2020, according to majority owner Mark Davis.</p><p>The Raiders were close to signing Brady but previous head coach Jon Gruden and general manager Mike Mayock decided against it, Davis revealed in an interview with former NBA All-Star Baron Davis.</p><p>"He was supposed to be here in 2020," the 70-year-old Davis <a href="https://www.raiders.com/video/mark-davis-tom-brady-wnba-nfl-baron-davis">said</a>. "That's when our relationship started, was in 2020 when he was a free agent and we talked to him about coming here to play quarterback. And obviously, it was a tough decision for him, he was close to wanting to come here, but the head coach and general manager decided they wanted to go in a different direction. ...</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>"So, we didn't sign him, but as I got to know him through that process, I let his agent know that when he was done playing, I would like him to be a part of our organization."</p><p>The Raiders continued to roll with Derek Carr under center in 2020. He remained with the team until 2023 before being released. The Raiders made one playoff appearance in this span, a wild-card loss to the Cincinnati Bengals during the 2021 campaign. Meanwhile, Brady joined the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and found instant success, winning his seventh Super Bowl in his first year with the team.</p><p>This isn't the first time the Raiders' previous regime was singled out as the reason for Brady not signing with the team. UFC CEO Dana White previously <a href="https://www.thescore.com/nfl/news/2402931/amp">said</a> in 2022 that Gruden blew up a potential deal that would've seen Brady and longtime teammate Rob Gronkowski head to Las Vegas.</p><p>Brady did join the Raiders as a minority owner once his playing career wrapped up. The incident marked McLaren's first retirement caused solely by a mechanical gremlin since the 2023 Bahrain Grand Prix, 60 races ago. It couldn't have come at a worse time.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>The British driver was about one second behind race leader Oscar Piastri before his retirement. Now, he's 34 points back of the championship with nine race weekends to go.</p><p>History says Norris isn't dead yet. Sebastian Vettel overcame a 39-point deficit with seven races left to win the 2012 title. However, there were numerous contenders then. He qualified fourth ahead of all Mercedes and Ferrari cars. More shockingly, Hadjar then brilliantly defended his place from challengers Charles Leclerc and George Russell. The performance was already a contender for one of the best drives of the year, but Hadjar was rewarded with a promotion to a podium spot due to Norris' retirement.</p><p>Zandvoort added accolades to Hadjar's already impressive resume. The French youngster is one of only six drivers who haven't been eliminated in Q1 this season, joining both McLaren drivers, Leclerc, Russell, and Max Verstappen. Hadjar is the fifth-youngest driver in F1 history to stand on the podium. It probably won't be long until he's being discussed for a promotion to Red Bull.</p><h3>Kimi Antonelli is in a crisis</h3><p>Antonelli is in the midst of a spiral that appears to have no end in sight. His disastrous run hit a new low point in Zandvoort after he received multiple penalties, including one for taking out Leclerc with a lousy overtake on Lap 53.</p><figure class="article-segment--embed"><blockquote class="twitter-tweet">

After the team and Hamilton made strides from Friday's practice through qualifying, it was looking like the exact weekend the British driver needed to start the second stage of the season on the right note.</p><p>There would be no redemption arc, though, thanks to a series of self-inflicted mistakes. Hamilton crashed at Turn 3, ending his race prematurely. He later got a five-place grid penalty for Monza for failing to slow under double yellow flags on the reconnaissance laps before Sunday's race. Hamilton hasn't scored points in two straight races, and 12 drivers have outscored him over the last three grand prix weekends (six points).</p><p>Hamilton was supposed to receive a hero's welcome on his first trip to Monza in Ferrari red. It won't quite be that, but all can be forgiven in the minds of the Tifosi with a positive showing. This could be a pivotal point in the Hamilton-Ferrari fairy tale.</p><h3>The racing guidelines lack common sense</h3><p>Carlos Sainz couldn't believe the FIA gave him a 10-second penalty for his role in a collision with Liam Lawson, <a href="https://x.com/F1/status/1962229077521150362?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1962229077521150362%7Ctwgr%5E20b0d92e180acc582ebfd479266db6dfa9475453%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&amp;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fcmsadmin.thescore.com%2Fadmin%2Fnewsroom%2Farticles%2F3335336">calling it</a> "the most ridiculous thing I've heard in my life."</p><p>The crash between the two drivers was the latest disconnect between the FIA's racing guidelines and the naked eye. It seemed clear that Lawson caused the collision by drifting wide at Turn 1. However, because the racing guidelines almost always favor the driver on the inside, the stewards <a href="https://x.com/fiadocsbot/status/1962166283572576548">deemed</a> Sainz at fault for attempting a move around the outside without his front axle being ahead.</p><figure class="article-segment--embed"><blockquote class="twitter-tweet">

<p>The Dallas Cowboys and cornerback <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nfl/players/174214" href="https://thescore.com/nfl/players/174214">DaRon Bland</a> have agreed to a four-year extension worth $92 million, the team announced Sunday.</p><p>The contract includes $50 million guaranteed, according to <a href="http://www.nfl.com/news/cowboys-cb-daron-bland-agree-to-terms-on-four-year-92-million-contract-extension">NFL Network's Ian Rapoport</a>. Bland's average annual value of $23 million per year makes him the sixth-highest-paid cornerback in the NFL.</p><p>Bland was entering the final year of his rookie deal.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>The long-term extension comes just days after the franchise traded star edge rusher <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nfl/players/161667" href="https://thescore.com/nfl/players/161667">Micah Parsons</a> to the Green Bay Packers due to a contract dispute.</p><p>Bland missed the first 11 weeks of last season while recovering from a stress fracture in his left foot. He failed to grab an interception over his seven starts.</p><p>The 26-year-old was one of the league's biggest ball hawks over his first two seasons. He recorded five interceptions as a rookie in 2022 before leading the NFL with nine interceptions in 2023. He also made NFL history in 2023 with five interceptions returned for a touchdown, a single-season record.</p>

Fields started the first six games of last season for Pittsburgh, going 4-2 before giving way to a healthy <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nfl/players/12258" href="https://thescore.com/nfl/players/12258">Russell Wilson</a>.</p><p>The Jets signed Fields to a two-year, $40-million contract in free agency. He's compiled a 14-30 record with a 61.1% completion rate, 45 passing touchdowns, and 31 interceptions. He's also rushed for 2,509 yards and 19 scores over his career.</p>

<p>Indianapolis Colts general manager Chris Ballard says <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nfl/players/188125" href="https://thescore.com/nfl/players/188125">Anthony Richardson</a> won't be on the trade block despite <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nfl/players/97984" href="https://thescore.com/nfl/players/97984">Daniel Jones</a> being chosen as the team's starting quarterback.</p><p>"We're not trading him," Ballard told reporters Wednesday, including <a href="https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/46089177/colts-trade-anthony-richardson-gm-chris-ballard-says">ESPN's Stephen Holder</a>.</p><p>The topic of Richardson's future was amplified after his agent <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///news/3328018" href="https://thescore.com/news/3328018">said</a> that trust between the 23-year-old passer and the franchise was "questionable" following the team's quarterback decision.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>Richardson, who was drafted fourth overall in 2023, hasn't developed into the passer the Colts hoped for. He was benched for two games last season before regaining the starting job. </p><p>Engaged in another quarterback competition this preseason, Richardson lost the role to Jones, who signed with Indianapolis as a free agent in March.</p><p>Despite his setbacks, Ballard believes sitting behind Jones could do Richardson good. He mentioned that Jones was picked due to his ability to operate the line of scrimmage prior to the snap.</p><p>"There's a lot of value in sitting behind a guy that's a professional and watching and learning and growing and working on the things you need to work on without the same pressure of being the starter," Ballard explained.</p><p>The GM added that he still believes Richardson has the traits to be a franchise quarterback in the NFL.</p><p>"I think it's sure in him," Ballard said. "I do. I think it's in him. Whether that happens or not, we'll see."</p><p>Richardson completed just 47.7% of his passes for 1,814 yards and eight touchdowns against 12 interceptions in 2024.</p>
