<p>The unofficial kickoff for Formula 1's 2025 season is in the books after preseason testing was completed in Bahrain. Just under two weeks remain until the season-opening Australian Grand Prix. The reigning constructors' champion arrived to preseason testing with a car that appears to have taken many steps in the right direction from its MCL38 predecessor. That isn't too surprising considering the developments McLaren pursued last season also enhanced the car's performance.</p><p>What was especially ominous for the rest of the field was a long run from Lando Norris on Thursday afternoon. Norris' pace outclassed Ferrari and Mercedes' long run times, and while a lot of variables are invisible to the naked eye in preseason testing, there's no hiding how much more comfortable Norris seems in the cockpit compared to the rest of the grid.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><h3>Questions surrounding Ferrari, Red Bull</h3><p>The two biggest figures coming into Bahrain were undoubtedly new Ferrari driver Lewis Hamilton and reigning world champion Max Verstappen. However, it was anything but a smooth preseason for their respective teams.</p><p>Ferrari entered the test with early optimism Wednesday, but the air of hopefulness seemed to evaporate more and more with each passing day. Charles Leclerc appeared a step behind McLaren in long runs on the second day and instead challenged Mercedes in lap times. It went from bad to worse Friday, as Hamilton's long runs in the afternoon had only 10 and three laps of proper running, and the lap times were not pleasant. Remember, though, Hamilton isn't the only one experiencing change. Ferrari made a number of adjustments to the SF-25 car, including the front suspension. While it may eventually unlock the sought-after potential, there will be, as Bahrain demonstrated, growing pains.</p><p>McLaren will open as the favorite, but where Red Bull falls in the top four is anyone's guess. That's partially because the team completed fewer laps - just 304 - than any other constructor. A water-pressure issue left Liam Lawson out of the cockpit for a bit Thursday, while Verstappen and his crew tinkered in the garage for optimization during parts of Friday. That left the reigning drivers' champion with no time to put down a full race simulation, which McLaren, Ferrari, and Mercedes did over the final two days. The RB21, which surprised many by looking very similar to its volatile predecessor, still showed hints of the troubling flaws that were embedded in the RB20. Verstappen did impress after over one lap and the few times he strung together consecutive laps, but the truth of the RB21 will likely be revealed in Melbourne.</p><h3>Mercedes could make it interesting</h3><figure class="article-segment--image"><img src="https://assets-cms.thescore.com/uploads/image/file/772806/cropped_GettyImages-2201789843.jpg?ts=1740774944" srcset="https://assets-cms.thescore.com/uploads/image/file/772806/w220xh124_GettyImages-2201789843.jpg?ts=1740774944 220w, https://assets-cms.thescore.com/uploads/image/file/772806/w320xh180_GettyImages-2201789843.jpg?ts=1740774944 320w, https://assets-cms.thescore.com/uploads/image/file/772806/w640xh360_GettyImages-2201789843.jpg?ts=1740774944 640w, https://assets-cms.thescore.com/uploads/image/file/772806/w768xh432_GettyImages-2201789843.jpg?ts=1740774944 768w, https://assets-cms.thescore.com/uploads/image/file/772806/w1080xh607_GettyImages-2201789843.jpg?ts=1740774944 1080w"><figcaption class="article-segment--image-caption"> <span class="article-segment--image-attribution">FADEL SENNA / AFP / Getty</span></figcaption></figure><p>Mercedes was arguably the only candidate from the group of front-runners - outside McLaren - to end testing on a high. The Silver Arrows have the potential to throw a wrench in everyone's predictions if that strong finish isn't a mirage.</p><p>There was a lot to be happy about for Toto Wolff and the new-look Mercedes, now led by George Russell and supported by 18-year-old rookie Kimi Antonelli. Antonelli did not look out of his depth, while Russell ended the final day with the fastest time. Russell's race simulation Friday was adrift from McLaren's Piastri on its first stint, but his final two stints surprisingly challenged Piastri. Antonelli's afternoon race run Thursday was in a similar ballpark as Leclerc's - a promising sign.</p><p>Bahrain's cooler-than-usual temperatures, which typically favored Mercedes in 2024, must be considered. Russell completed his impressive long run Friday about an hour later than Piastri. Mercedes' biggest deficit on the long runs also seemed to come on the C3 tire as opposed to the harder C2 or C1 compound. There are questions here, but this first impression suggests Mercedes is trending upward after last season.</p><h3>Williams and Alpine surprise</h3><p>Who would have thought 12 months ago that the battle for best of the rest would come down to Williams and Alpine? The French team appeared to carry its momentum into 2025, while the fastest lap set over the entire three-day session was held by Williams driver Carlos Sainz.</p><p>Topping the timesheets in preseason tests is often fool's gold, but it's a confidence builder for a <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///news/3098335" href="https://thescore.com/news/3098335">Williams team that has been transformed under James Vowles</a>. It's also evidence of real progress. I can't go out like that."</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>Kelce admitted after Kansas City's blowout Super Bowl loss to the Philadelphia Eagles that he was uncertain about his NFL future. He's also earned four first-team All-Pro berths and was a member of the NFL 2010s All-Decade Team.</p>

The report card credits new head coach Dan Quinn as being a key catalyst to the improvement along with investments in the food program, increased frequency of family events, and daycare implementation during home games.</p><h3>Odd tidbits</h3><ul><li>The New York Jets and owner Woody Johnson ranked 32nd in ownership, dropping from a B- grade to an F in 2025. Some players described issues with top leadership as "top-down problems."</li></ul><ul><li>The Atlanta Falcons made the biggest jump, going from 25th in 2024 to third this year. Their higher score is credited to major facility upgrades to the weight room, locker room, and dining area.</li></ul><ul><li>The Carolina Panthers received a D in travel after the new coaching staff moved players from first-class seats last season to coach seats this year.</li></ul><ul><li>The Cincinnati Bengals are the only team in the league to provide neither gameday daycare nor a family room.</li></ul><ul><li>The top two teams in the head coach category were new hires (Commanders and Falcons).</li></ul>

Last season, he threw 28 touchdowns to 11 interceptions while completing 63% of his passes for 3,987 yards.</p><p>Mougey also said Tuesday that the Jets would address the future of wide receiver <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nfl/players/57482" href="https://thescore.com/nfl/players/57482">Davante Adams</a> in the coming weeks.</p>

Through seven games, the veteran receiver caught 50 passes for 576 yards and five touchdowns. His average of 82.3 yards per game was on pace to be the second-best mark of his career.</p><p>Licht admitted "there's still some uncertainties" but Godwin is "progressing."</p><p>"He's doing everything he can. ... We're gonna use as much time as we have to consider options and consider with regards to him, how we construct things or how we do things," Licht said. "That's where we're at right now."</p><p>Godwin, who turns 29 on Feb. 27, signed a three-year, $60-million extension in 2022. He was coming off a torn ACL that ended his 2021 campaign.</p><p>Godwin's played his entire eight-year career in Tampa Bay. He's earned one Pro Bowl invite and a Super Bowl ring.</p>

How is Lewis Hamilton progressing at Ferrari?</h3><p>Nothing at preseason testing will get more buzz than Hamilton driving a cherry-red Ferrari. The seven-time champion, fresh off his move from Mercedes, underwent an extensive testing program this winter break to accelerate his acclimation with his new team. His move to the legendary Italian team has already been a commercial hit, the likes of which F1 hasn't seen in a while, but success will ultimately be determined by the stopwatch. Just how comfortable is Hamilton in a Ferrari-powered car at this stage? And what is the gap - if there is one - between him and teammate Charles Leclerc? Time is ticking until Australia, meaning it will be crucial for Hamilton to spend as much time as possible behind the wheel during the Bahrain preseason tests.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><h3>2. Will McLaren be in a league of its own?</h3><p>The 2024 constructors' champs appear intent on taking home both titles in 2025. The release of McLaren's car, the MCL39, makes it clear that the team will attempt a big leap this season. The suspension on the car is a noticeable step further with an increase in anti-dive. McLaren's been the king of development in recent years, and you can bet the majority of the paddock will be keeping an eye on the MCL39. Has the Milton Keynes factory corrected the fatal flaws of the RB20, which included suspension limitations, a narrow operating window, and correlation gremlins? It's been a quiet break for Red Bull as McLaren and Ferrari soaked up all the limelight, but Bahrain's testing might give us an idea of whether the RB21 will work with Verstappen instead of against him.</p><h3>4. Who looks like the best of the rest?</h3><p>The top four teams in 2025 will almost surely be McLaren, Ferrari, Red Bull, and Mercedes, though the exact order remains to be seen. The actual mystery is how the pecking order from fifth to 10th shapes up. Aston Martin ended last season as the best of the rest despite a one-sided driver pairing, but the Silverstone-team finished the year in horrid form. Alpine was the biggest riser among the pack at the end of 2024, scoring 52 points over the last five races while Aston Martin, Haas, RB, Sauber, and Williams combined for 42 points. Will the French team carry over that form? Williams is also a threat to capitalize on any available opportunities for points with an impressive driver lineup that now features the talented Carlos Sainz. The success of Haas and Racing Bulls, formerly RB, will likely be dictated by the pace of Ferrari and Red Bull, respectively. The midfield has the potential to feature some of the toughest battles of the season.</p><h3>5. Which rookie will progress the fastest? </h3><p>Six full-season rookies will occupy race seats in 2025, each with a talented teammate to serve as the benchmark. The best first impression will be determined by which of the rookies gels into their environment the quickest. Soaking up on-track time will be crucial for the likes of Kimi Antonelli, Gabriel Bortoleto, Isack Hadjar, Jack Doohan, and Ollie Bearman. Liam Lawson already has 11 grand prix under his belt, but the mileage will still be important for him as he steps into Red Bull's second seat, which has been a pressure cooker for drivers since 2019. There isn't a rookie driver who can afford to miss any track running due to a crash or mechanical issue.</p>

<p>Pittsburgh Steelers general manager Omar Khan said "all options are on the table" until he gets at least one of his 2024 quarterbacks under contract.</p><p>"The reality is last year we went into this understanding that we had three quarterbacks in the last year of their deal," Khan said Tuesday at the NFL Scouting Combine, according to <a href="https://x.com/MarkKaboly/status/1894397421196566798">Mark Kaboly of "The Pat McAfee Show."</a> "And here we are. Until we get one of those guys or two of those guys or some combination of them signed up, all options are on the table."</p><p>Khan added that he's already had conversations with the representatives of <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nfl/players/12258" href="https://thescore.com/nfl/players/12258">Russell Wilson</a> and <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nfl/players/161671" href="https://thescore.com/nfl/players/161671">Justin Fields</a>. Khan said he believes both passers are interested in returning, and he would like to complete a deal with at least one of them prior to the start of free agency, according to <a href="https://x.com/bepryor/status/1894397889671008461">ESPN's Brooke Pryor</a>.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>The GM's comments echo owner Art Rooney II's <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///news/3202292" href="https://thescore.com/news/3202292">remarks</a> from January when he said he'd prefer to re-sign one of the two passers.</p><p>Fields opened the season as Pittsburgh's starting quarterback following an injury to Wilson and produced a 4-2 record with five passing touchdowns, five rushing scores, and one interception. Wilson took over in Week 7 and started 6-1 before losing his last five starts, including a playoff defeat in the wild-card round.</p><p>"The way we ended (last season) was unacceptable," Khan said, per Kaboly.</p><p>He added: "That can't happen again."</p><p>The franchise is additionally interested in extending wideout <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nfl/players/174055" href="https://thescore.com/nfl/players/174055">George Pickens</a>, who's entering the final year of his rookie deal. "We have a desire for him to be great and to be great here," Khan said, via <a href="https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/44010710/steelers-want-get-deal-done-george-pickens-gm-says">Pryor</a>.</p><p>Khan also mentioned that the Steelers haven't closed the door on a possible return for running back and pending free agent <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nfl/players/161659" href="https://thescore.com/nfl/players/161659">Najee Harris</a>, according to team reporter <a href="https://x.com/dlolley_pgh/status/1894398770323808279">Dale Lolley</a>. Pittsburgh declined the fifth-year option on Harris' rookie contract prior to the 2024 season. Meanwhile, restricted free-agent running back <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nfl/players/174319" href="https://thescore.com/nfl/players/174319">Jaylen Warren</a> will be tendered.</p>

<p>An unnamed NFL team proposed banning the tush push, NFL executive vice president of football operations Troy Vincent said Monday, according to <a href="https://x.com/judybattista/status/1894078817523683343">NFL Network's Judy Battista</a>.</p><p>The Green Bay Packers submitted the proposal to the league's competition committee, sources told <a href="https://x.com/DMRussini/status/1894109546714456120">The Athletic's Dianna Russini</a>.</p><p>The question is whether the play can be modified to retain some elements, <a href="https://x.com/judybattista/status/1894080398751093173">Battista</a> added. There isn't enough data to support the NFL banning the play due to injury concerns because it's run so rarely.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>Vincent <a href="https://www.nfl.com/news/unnamed-nfl-team-proposes-rule-to-ban-tush-push-play-popularized-by-eagles?campaign=Twitter_atn">added</a> that the tush push will "become a topic of discussion moving into March." The league's annual meeting starts March 30.</p><p>The tush push, popularized and used to great success by the Philadelphia Eagles, involves two players pushing the quarterback from behind during a short-yardage situation.</p><p>The play received increased attention in the NFC Championship Game after the Washington Commanders were penalized four times in five plays for trying to jump the snap on a <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nfl/players/105247" href="https://thescore.com/nfl/players/105247">Jalen Hurts</a> tush push goal-line sneak. The officials threatened to award an automatic touchdown to the Eagles.</p><p>There was talk about a potential tush push ban last year as well, though the NFL decided not to propose a rules change due to the lack of injury data.</p>

A Heisman finalist, Jeanty fell just short of the FBS single-season record of 2,628 yards, which Barry Sanders set in 1988 with Oklahoma State.</p><p>Jeanty is expected to be the first running back selected in the 2025 draft.</p><p>The 2025 NFL Scouting Combine begins Feb. 27 and ends March 2.</p>
