White: UFC targeting Edwards-Chimaev for Jan. 20 main event
The UFC plans to reschedule the welterweight bout between Leon Edwards and Khamzat Chimaev for the Jan. 20 main event, UFC president Dana White told TSN's Aaron Bronsteter.
Edwards and Chimaev were supposed to face off in the UFC Fight Night main event on Dec. 19, but the bout was called off after Edwards tested positive for COVID-19.
Edwards hasn't stepped into the Octagon since a win over former lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos in July 2019. The Brit is riding an eight-fight winning streak, ranking No. 3 in the 170-pound division.
Chimaev, the promotion's hottest prospect, has won three in a row since signing with the UFC in July 2020. "Borz" most recently knocked out Gerald Meerschaert in 17 seconds.
The promotion has not yet announced the Jan. 20 card. Events will also take place Jan. 16 and Jan. 23, the latter of which is the Conor McGregor-Dustin Poirier pay-per-view card.
The trio of events is reportedly expected to take place in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, but that hasn't been confirmed.
