Report: NFL settles Rams relocation lawsuit for $790M; no new St. Louis team
Lawyers for the NFL have settled the Rams relocation lawsuit for $790 million, sources told Joel Currier and Ben Frederickson of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.
St. Louis and St. Louis County officials are expected to announce the settlement Wednesday morning.
The settlement doesn't include an expansion team for St. Louis, added Currier and Frederickson.
The city, the county, and the Regional Convention and Sports Complex Authority filed a civil suit against Rams owner Stan Kroenke, the organization, the NFL, and its owners in 2017 following the team's move to Los Angeles the year prior.
The suit alleged the league broke its relocation rules to avoid antitrust liability, misled the public on its plans to leave the city, and cost St. Louis millions in revenue.
The NFL denied any wrongdoing after the lawsuit was filed in 2017, saying there was "no legitimate basis for this litigation." The league was denied a hearing in the U.S. Supreme Court.
A public trial in St. Louis was set to start in January 2022.
Kroenke reportedly angered other team owners during an October meeting by suggesting he could break his promise to cover tens of millions of dollars in legal expenses related to the Rams' departure from St. Louis.
It's reportedly unclear how much of the settlement Kroenke will pay and how much the NFL will cover.
