Report: Jets to host Clowney, expected to be interested in Mike Williams
The New York Jets are hosting pass-rusher Jadeveon Clowney for a free-agent visit next week, according to Zack Rosenblatt of The Athletic.
New York is also expected to explore signing former Los Angeles Chargers wide receiver Mike Williams but won't get into a "bidding war" with other teams, Rosenblatt adds.
The 31-year-old Clowney met with the Carolina Panthers on Thursday, sources told Mike Garafolo of NFL Network.
Clowney had an excellent season for the Baltimore Ravens in 2023, totaling 43 tackles, 19 quarterback hits, and nine-and-a-half sacks in 17 games. New York is eyeing pass-rush help after Bryce Huff agreed to sign with the Philadelphia Eagles on the first day of the legal tampering period.
L.A. released Williams on Wednesday to save $20 million in cap space. He'd spent his entire seven-year career with the Chargers after they selected him seventh overall in the 2017 draft.
The Clemson product has been productive when healthy, racking up 4,806 receiving yards and 31 touchdowns in 88 career regular-season games. However, injuries have plagued the 29-year-old in recent years.
An ACL tear suffered in Week 3 ended Williams' 2023 season. He also missed five games in the 2022 campaign, including the club's loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars in the wild-card round.
The Jets planned to "aggressively pursue" Williams in 2022 if he hit free agency, per Rosenblatt, but he ultimately signed a three-year extension with the Chargers.
