Prescott: Cowboys 'very close' to Eagles competitively
Star quarterback Dak Prescott is confident that there isn't much separation between the Dallas Cowboys and Super Bowl LIX champions the Philadelphia Eagles.
"I feel that we compete with the Eagles and beat them for the most part when we play them," Prescott told reporters Tuesday, including The Athletic's Jon Machota. "I don't want to say 'check the record' when they're the guys holding the trophy right now, so credit to them. They've earned it and they deserved it by all means. But very close. Even watch the NFC (title) game ... those two teams that we battle against each and every year a couple of times. And as I said, (we) feel confident that we've gotten the better part each and every time."
Prescott added, "It's our turn and it's on us."
Dallas went 7-10 and missed the postseason after posting three consecutive 12-5 seasons from 2021-23 that resulted in playoff appearances. The Cowboys were spectators as NFC East rivals the Washington Commanders and Philadelphia Eagles made it to the conference championship game. The Eagles claimed the sport's top honor by defeating the Kansas City Chiefs in the Super Bowl.
The Cowboys went 1-3 combined against the Commanders and Eagles. Their lone win was a 34-26 victory over Washington in Week 12 with Cooper Rush under center.
Dallas dismissed head coach Mike McCarthy in January and promoted offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer, who's spent the past two seasons coaching Prescott. The Cowboys signal-caller expressed excitement about what the longtime assistant will add to the offense.
Prescott emphasized the team's need to get back to the run game so "the rest of the offense can open up."
He also provided a positive update regarding his hamstring injury, saying that he's ready to amp up his rehab after undergoing season-ending surgery in mid-November. The three-time Pro Bowler was hurt in Week 9's loss to the Atlanta Falcons.
The 31-year-old finished 2024 having thrown for 1,978 yards, 11 touchdowns, and eight interceptions with a 64.7% completion rate. The Cowboys' offense averaged 20.6 points and 328.4 total yards per game.
