Tortorella benches Konecny in OT loss vs. Bruins
Philadelphia Flyers forward Travis Konecny was benched Saturday in his team's 4-3 overtime loss to the Boston Bruins.
"He was pulled by the (concussion) spotter, and then I stopped playing him," Flyers head coach John Tortorella said. "He's undisciplined, he's just too undisciplined."
The Flyers forward didn't play after taking an interference penalty against Boston defenseman Charlie McAvoy six minutes into the third period. McAvoy had delivered a big hit on Flyers forward Joel Farabee and Konecny went after the Bruins blue-liner.
Konecny was taken to the locker room while serving the penalty after being pulled by the concussion spotter. He was eligible to return to the game but wasn't used by Tortorella for the rest of the third period and overtime.
Konecny leads the Flyers with 13 goals and 31 points in 27 games. He was named to Canada's 4 Nations Face-Off roster earlier in the week.
Tortorella was also frustrated by the penalty differential in the contest.
"One thing I teach my team to do is not dive," Tortorella said. "Maybe I should start teaching them that. The way this has gone here, the way shit goes on, maybe I should start teaching them how to dive."
Tortorella added: "It's one of the things we talk about most as a team, we gotta play an honest game. There's no cheating. There's no embarrassing referees. You don't embarrass the referees. The shit that went on here tonight is just ridiculous. I'm proud of the way our team played. Did we piss another one away? Yeah. But other people had a little bit to do with that also."
The Bruins had six power plays Saturday compared to just two for Philadelphia.
The Flyers are 12-11-4 and rank fifth in the Metropolitan Division.
