Miller: Birkdale 'was set up really, really easy' for Grace's remarkable 62

Johnny Miller wasn't on hand to watch Justin Thomas break his U.S. Open single-round scoring record with a 9-under-par 63 in June, but he did provide his take on the score, and he wasn't particularly impressed.

Miller did, however, get a front-row seat Saturday to witness Branden Grace set the record for the lowest-ever round in major championship with a 62. He credited both the South African's play and a "really, really easy" course when he broke down the round from the 18th-hole tower.

"He played really, really well no doubt: Eight birdies, no bogeys, 10 out of 14 fairways, 16 out of 18 greens, 28 putts. Twenty-eight putts is quite a few putts to shoot 62," the NBC commentator said. "He did it with his ball-striking. He had to go through the gauntlet, and those putts that he made coming in were really strong, and he drove the ball terrifically and made the course really easy. It was set up really, really easy today, folks, but still a heck of a round."

The soft conditions have produced extremely low numbers at Royal Birkdale on Day 3 of The Open, but players were still impressed with Grace's round - including Sergio Garcia, who also took a jab at Miller.

"We all know how good Branden is when he gets going," Garcia told reporters. "A wonderful guy, and probably everyone is happy in the world except for one guy, Johnny Miller."
