Koepka slams weight-loss critics: 'I don't care what anyone else says'
All the talk surrounding Brooks Koepka coming into the Masters was about his significant weight loss of 22 pounds earlier this year instead of his quest for a fourth major title in seven starts.
Reports have surfaced claiming Koepka will appear in ESPN Magazine's Body Issue later this summer. He didn't explain why he dropped the weight, but the three-time major champ did reveal to Eamon Lynch of Golf Week on Tuesday that he may have gone a bit far with his diet of just 1,800 calories per day.
The admission prompted Brandel Chamblee of Golf Channel to call Koepka's choice to drop the weight, "the most reckless self-sabotage that I have ever seen of an athlete in his prime."
After answering his critics on the course with a blistering opening-round 66 to sit tied for the lead at Augusta National, Koepka took the time to answer them off the course as well.
"I lift too many weights, and I'm too big to play golf. And then when I lose weight, I'm too small," Koepka said, according to Ryan Lavner of Golf Channel. "I'm going to make me happy. I don't care what anyone else says."
Koepka, who's now in the driver's seat to win his third major in the last four events, then looked at the leaderboard before finishing his answer.
"I'm doing it for me, and obviously it seems to work."
