Report: New Man United boss Amorim denied January spending spree

Manchester United have asked Ruben Amorim to work with what he's got at Old Trafford as the club keeps a close eye on transfer and wage budgets at the start of the new head coach's reign, a source told ESPN's Rob Dawson.

Amorim is the sixth full-time boss at United since Sir Alex Ferguson retired after clinching the club's last Premier League title in 2013. The Portuguese tactician's record at Sporting CP and reputation for improving players have increased hopes that he can finally return the club to England's summit.

However, a spending spree to reshape his squad isn't expected this January. It's also unlikely Amorim will be afforded the same transfer funds as predecessor Erik ten Hag, who spent more than £600 million on 15 first-team players across three summer windows, while the club deals with financial concerns.

Sporting director Dan Ashworth and technical director Jason Wilcox are the key figures in United's revamped recruitment structure under co-owner Jim Ratcliffe, but they'll consult Amorim when striking incoming and outgoing deals next summer.

The Amorim era officially begins Sunday when 13th-place United travel to Ipswich Town.
