A's land Chafin from Cubs for 2 prospects
The Oakland Athletics acquired left-handed reliever Andrew Chafin from the Chicago Cubs along with cash considerations in exchange for outfielder Greg Deichmann and pitching prospect Daniel Palencia, the teams announced.
Chafin, 31, has been dominant for the Cubs this season. He owns a 2.06 ERA and 0.84 WHIP with 37 strikeouts in 39 1/3 innings this year while allowing just one home run. He'll provide a much-needed boost to an Oakland bullpen that ranks 20th in total production this season.
The Cubs acquired Chafin from the Arizona Diamondbacks at last year's deadline, then re-signed him to a one-year, $2.25-million deal in the offseason. His deal contains a $5.25-million mutual option for 2022.
Deichmann, ranked as the A's No. 9 prospect by MLB.com, was Oakland's second-round draft pick in 2017 and is on their 40-man roster. The 26-year-old owns a .300/.432/.449 slash line with four homers, 20 extra-base hits, 34 RBIs, and seven stolen bases in 59 games at Triple-A Las Vegas.
Palencia, 21, was signed by the A's out of Venezuela last February. He's a right-handed starting pitcher whose fastball tops out at 97-99 mph, according to ESPN's Jeff Passan. In six outings with Low-A Stockton this year he owns a 6.91 ERA and 1.61 WHIP with 14 strikeouts and six walks.
