Blue Jays' Berríos to see specialist about injured elbow

Toronto Blue Jays right-hander José Berríos will visit Dr. Keith Meister on Tuesday to have his right elbow inflammation evaluated, manager John Schneider said Friday, according to MLB.com's Keegan Matheson.

Berríos recently underwent an MRI, which revealed the inflammation. He wasn't permitted to pitch in the World Baseball Classic for Puerto Rico as a result of his insurance being denied.

While the severity of Berríos' inflammation is currently unknown, Schneider said Thursday the right-hander feels good and plans to continue throwing.

Elbow inflammation sidelined Berríos near the end of the 2025 campaign and forced him to miss the entire postseason. However, this recent bout of inflammation is "different," according to Schneider.

Before last season, the 31-year-old was typically one of the more durable starters in baseball, as he'd made a full campaign's worth of starts in every season since 2018.

If Berríos begins the season on the injured list, he'll join fellow starter Shane Bieber.

Toronto's other starting options include Kevin Gausman, Dylan Cease, Cody Ponce, Trey Yesavage, Eric Lauer, and Max Scherzer.
