Brogdon retires after 9 NBA seasons
Veteran guard Malcolm Brogdon announced his retirement from professional basketball Wednesday.
"I am deeply grateful to have arrived to this point on my own terms and now to be able to reap the benefits of my career with my family and friends," he said in a statement, courtesy of ESPN's Shams Charania. "Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, to all who have had a place in my journey."
Brogdon, 32, recently signed a camp deal with the New York Knicks and suited up for them in preseason. He was a strong candidate to make the team's final roster as a backup point guard to franchise star Jalen Brunson.
Brogdon played nine NBA seasons, during which he represented five different franchises.
The Virginia product won Rookie of the Year for the 2016-17 season after getting drafted 36th overall to the Milwaukee Bucks. He averaged 10.2 points, 4.2 assists, and 2.8 rebounds with shooting splits of 45.7/40.4/86.5 in his debut campaign. He remains one of just three players picked in the second round to win Rookie of the Year, along with Terry Dischinger (1963) and Willis Reed (1965).
After three seasons apiece with the Bucks and Indiana Pacers, Brogdon was traded to the Boston Celtics ahead of the 2022-23 season. He won Sixth Man of the Year in his lone season in Boston, helping the club finish a game behind the Bucks at the top of the Eastern Conference.
He also played for the Portland Trail Blazers and Washington Wizards over the last two seasons. However, he missed substantial time due to multiple injuries.
Brogdon finishes his career with averages of 15.3 points, 4.7 assists, and 4.1 rebounds over 463 games.
