Jets' Saleh expects Williams to get extension by training camp

New York Jets head coach Robert Saleh is confident that star defensive tackle Quinnen Williams will report to training camp with a lucrative extension.

"I speak for everyone, I probably speak for Quinnen, in that we all want (to) get done sooner rather than later," Saleh said Tuesday before practice, according to ESPN's Rich Cimini.

"I'll let the business guys handle all that stuff, but it's going to get done. He'll be here for camp. He'll be ready to roll and once he is, I'm sure it'll be the same guy who was here."

Williams has stayed away from team facilities throughout most of the offseason as he continues to negotiate a new deal. He is set to earn just under $9.6 million in the final year of his contract, according to Over the Cap.

The first-team All-Pro defender is seeking a large payday after posting 55 tackles, 12 sacks, and 12 tackles for loss in 2022. The 25-year-old has emerged as a consistent disrupter along the line of scrimmage for the Jets after tallying 33 tackles for loss and 27.5 sacks through four seasons.

Williams aims to join Daron Payne, Jeffery Simmons, and Dexter Lawrence, who agreed to extensions this offseason worth an average of $22 million annually, per Over the Cap.

The Jets don't need to be concerned about Williams' attendance at a mandatory minicamp after Saleh announced they were canceling next week's practice sessions due to the team's early report date for training camp. The Jets play the Cleveland Browns in the Hall of Fame Game on Aug. 3.
