Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Russell Wilson is questionable for Sunday's matchup against the Atlanta Falcons due to a calf injury, the team announced.

Wilson reported calf tightness on Thursday. He was limited in practice on both Thursday and Friday because of the ailment that also bothered him throughout training camp.

If Wilson can't play, Justin Fields will start under center for the Steelers. Fields took the first-team reps in Friday's practice, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.

Wilson was hopeful he'd be able to start before the official injury report was released.

"I just wanted to be smart about it," the veteran said, according to ESPN's Brooke Pryor. "Obviously, we play the game on Sunday. I'm hoping I get to be in it, obviously, but just trying to get ready to go.

"I'm trying to get my body ready to go and rock and roll, so we're doing everything we can."

Pittsburgh acquired both Wilson and Fields this offseason in a bid to improve the quarterback room.

The Steelers will also be without rookie receiver Roman Wilson due to an ankle sprain suffered in training camp.
