Burns: Giants need to 'grow up' after 3rd straight loss
Giants pass-rusher Brian Burns called out his team's maturity after New York dropped to 2-6 with its third straight loss.
"The team needs to grow up," Burns said after the Giants' loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers on Monday Night Football, according to NJ.com's Darryl Slater.
Burns, who was acquired in the offseason from the Carolina Panthers, highlighted that "details" and "preparation" are among the areas the team needs to improve.
The Giants tallied 11 penalties, several of which came on pre-snap infractions, that set the team back throughout its Week 8 matchup. Quarterback Daniel Jones threw a late interception that ended the Giants' late comeback attempt. He also lost a fumble earlier in the fourth quarter.
"To me, it doesn't come down to effort. I feel like guys play hard. I think it just comes down to details and being super detailed in your job," Burns said.
Defensive lineman Dexter Lawrence echoed Burns' frustration with what he believes is the team beating itself.
"Just the little shit beats us. It's on every individual to be focused. Everybody has just got to give a little more. Just show more passion. That's something you've got to do to grow," Lawrence said.
Cornerback Deonte Banks, a 2023 first-round pick, was benched in the second quarter of Monday's game after a missed tackle, and his effort was questioned by head coach Brian Daboll.
"He's a young player. Young players make mistakes," Burns said, according to ESPN's Jordan Raanan.
New York (2-6) is currently fourth in the NFC East with nine games remaining. Co-owner John Mara said last week that he anticipates Daboll and general manager Joe Schoen returning next season.
"The coaches can (only) say so much - period," Burns said, per Slater. "It's (on) the players."
The Giants will host the 6-2 Washington Commanders in Week 9.
