Barrett ending retirement, reportedly willing to play for Dolphins
Pass-rusher Shaquil Barrett is ending his retirement less than six months after stepping away from the NFL, his agents told ESPN's Adam Schefter.
Barrett applied for reinstatement, and he's willing to resume his career with the Miami Dolphins, a source told NFL Network's Cameron Wolfe. The Dolphins own the 32-year-old's contractual rights after he signed a one-year, $9-million deal with the team in the offseason before quitting.
"It all depends on the Dolphins and what they want to do. … Waiting for them to decide," Barrett's agent Drew Rosenhaus said, according to WVSN Talks' Josh Moser.
Barrett spent nine seasons between the Denver Broncos and Tampa Bay Buccaneers before joining the Dolphins as a free agent in March. He posted a league-leading 19.5 sacks to go along with 19 tackles for loss in 2019 to earn the first of his two Pro Bowl nods.
The veteran edge rusher's return would boost the Dolphins down the regular season's final stretch. Linebacker Bradley Chubb continues to work his way back from an ACL injury that ended his 2023 campaign. Jaelan Phillips is still on injured reserve after sustaining a knee injury earlier this season.
Rookie Chop Robinson and Emmanuel Ogbah have established themselves as Miami's starting edge rushers in 2024. The Dolphins are allowing the eighth-fewest passing yards per game this season (197.5).
