Eagles to sit Barkley in finale despite record chase

The Philadelphia Eagles will rest some players in their regular-season finale against the New York Giants, head coach Nick Sirianni told reporters Wednesday, including The Athletic's Brooks Kubena.

Running back Saquon Barkley, who's 100 yards shy of the single-season rushing record, is "probably" going to be a player that rests, Sirianni added.

Barkley has totaled 2,005 yards on 345 carries this season. Both marks lead all NFL runners. The 27-year-old has added 278 yards and two touchdowns on 33 receptions.

Eric Dickerson set the 2,105-yard rushing record in 1984 with the Los Angeles Rams.

"It's a very special record that's been standing for a very long time by a great player," Sirianni said, per NFL Network's Mike Garafolo, adding, "But you try to do what's best for the team."

Barkley acknowledged he'd like the record but that it's not his primary goal.

"That's what I tell my family," Barkley said, per Zach Berman of PHLY. "We didn't come here, I didn't sign here, to break Eric Dickerson's record. We came here to win the Super Bowl."

The Eagles are locked in as the NFC's No. 2 seed heading into Week 18. They'll host the No. 7 seed in the first round of the playoffs.
