5 biggest snubs from NFL's Pro Bowl rosters
A number of deserving names were left off the 2025 Pro Bowl rosters, which the NFL revealed Thursday.
Here are the five biggest snubs.
Baker Mayfield, QB, Buccaneers
One question emerges when scanning the NFC's Pro Bowl roster: Where is Baker Mayfield? The Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback's season has flown under the radar, and voters disregarded an impressive resume that matches or even beats the other three NFC signal-callers.
Mayfield ranks second in completion percentage (71.7%) and touchdown passes (39) and third in passing yards (4,279). Only Joe Burrow has thrown for more touchdowns. The Bengals quarterback and NFC starter Jared Goff are the only players with more passing yards than Mayfield.
It's a shame Mayfield has to argue his case to be on the NFC's roster when he should be in every conversation about the top performances from any quarterback this season.
Kerby Joseph, S, Lions
The player with the most interceptions - especially if it's by a good margin - should be a Pro Bowl shoo-in. Unfortunately for Joseph, whose nine interceptions are two ahead of the closest player, that wasn't the case.
The Detroit Lions ballhawk has menaced opposing quarterbacks this season, becoming just the fifth player over the last 12 seasons to grab nine or more interceptions.
Player | Year | Interceptions |
---|---|---|
Kerby Joseph | 2024 | 9 |
DaRon Bland | 2023 | 9 |
Trevon Diggs | 2021 | 11 |
Xavien Howard | 2020 | 10 |
J.C. Jackson | 2020 | 9 |
Three of his four predecessors were selected to the Pro Bowl, with J.C. Jackson the only exception. The NFL and voters made the same mistake again.
Danielle Hunter, DE, Texans
Which player would you rather have rushing the passer with the game on the line: Player A, with 12 sacks and 66 pressures this season per PFF, or Player B, with six sacks and 47 pressures? It's a no-brainer, right? Well, not for Pro Bowl voters.
Hunter is Player A while Khalil Mack - who was selected - is Player B. Hunter's 12 sacks trail only Trey Hendrickson and Myles Garrett, who have 14 each, yet he didn't make the roster. Of course name value influences Pro Bowl voting, but this decision is a head-scratcher.
Brian Thomas Jr., WR, Jaguars
OK, the Jacksonville Jaguars weren't exactly enjoyable to watch this season. But if there was any reason to check out what was happening in Duval County, it was Thomas.
Thomas is fifth in the NFL in receiving yards with 1,179, and all the receivers ahead of him got Pro Bowl nods. He's also among just eight players who caught eight or more touchdowns. Not only is Thomas is a rookie, but he put together this impressive campaign while catching passes from Trevor Lawrence in only 10 games, with Mac Jones starting the other six.
It's questionable whether Zay Flowers or Nico Collins earned the spot over Thomas, though at least the latter produced when healthy. Flowers ranks 16th in yards, and the rookie outclassed him in every receiving category.
Player | Receptions | Receiving Yards | Yards Per Catch | Touchdowns |
---|---|---|---|---|
Brian Thomas Jr. | 80 | 1179 | 14.7 | 10 |
Zay Flowers | 73 | 1047 | 14.3 | 4 |
Patrick Mahomes, QB, Chiefs
For the first time since Mahomes became the Chiefs' full-time quarterback in 2018, he wasn't selected to the Pro Bowl. It's surreal that a quarterback who's served as the gatekeeper to glory, stopping many rivals from tasting a fraction of the success he's enjoyed, didn't make it.
Four other players from Kansas City's offense were selected, including Travis Kelce, who's had a down season. But Mahomes is the engine that's powered the Chiefs to a 15-1 campaign, surrounded by what's arguably his weakest supporting cast since he took over. Shouldn't that count for something?
Although Mahomes' importance to the Chiefs' one-loss campaign is undeniable, there realistically just isn't room for him this time. The AFC's three picks - Joe Burrow, Josh Allen, and Lamar Jackson - are all having MVP-level seasons while Mahomes owns an unspectacular 26-11 touchdown-to-interception line. Besides, the 29-year-old typically isn't available for the Pro Bowl due to his Super Bowl commitments anyway.
