The Washington Commanders are trading running back Brian Robinson to the San Francisco 49ers in exchange for a 2026 sixth-round pick, sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter.

The Commanders were reportedly actively shopping Robinson before agreeing to Friday's trade. The NFC East franchise will retain a portion of the $3.4 million still owed to Robinson, who's entering the final year of his rookie contract, according to NFL Network's Mike Garafolo.

The 26-year-old running back provides much-needed insurance in the 49ers' backfield for Christian McCaffrey. Isaac Guerendo was slated to be the team's top back behind McCaffrey after San Francisco traded Jordan Mason to the Minnesota Vikings in March.

The departure of Robinson leaves Washington with a running back room featuring veteran Austin Ekeler and seventh-round rookie Jacory Croskey-Merritt, who has impressed in his first NFL offseason.

Robinson has 2,329 rushing yards across his first three NFL seasons. He's never recorded fewer than 733 yards on the ground in a campaign. He also hit a career-high 799 yards and eight touchdowns in 2024.
