Mickelson 1 stroke back after career day at Pebble Beach Pro-Am
Phil Mickelson fired a 6-under 65 in Round 1 of the Pebble Beach Pro-Am on Thursday, and he hit every fairway for the first time in over 20 years.
"So history was made today," he said after his round, according to Golf Digest's Alex Myers. "To the best of my knowledge, it's taken me 27 years and a few months to hit all fairways in a single round in a competition. I may have done it before but I don't ever recall doing it."
The 48-year-old's memory is a little foggy, as the last time he drove it this straight was actually in 1998 at Torrey Pines, 21 years ago.
Mickelson's round at Monterey Peninsula Country Club's Shore Course marks the fourth time he's opened the Pebble Beach Pro-Am with a 65. He won the event the previous three occasions, according to Golf Channel's Justin Ray.
Lefty trails leaders Brian Gay and Scott Langley, who both carded 7-under rounds of 64.
Jason Day, Kevin Kisner, Si Woo Kim, Matt Every, and Cody Gribble round out the logjam in a tie for third. Kim recorded the lowest score at Pebble Beach on Thursday, and Gribble's round was the best at Spyglass Hill.
Dustin Johnson and Jordan Spieth are in the mix after Day 1 with rounds of 5-under.
South Korean internet sensation Ho Sung Choi carded a 1-over 72 in his first PGA Tour round.
Round 2 tee times have been moved up an hour due to incoming inclement weather, with the first group teeing off at 10:00 a.m. ET on Friday.
