The Chiefs have only amassed 8.08% of the bets.</p><p>The Chiefs won 15 regular-season games last year and waltzed into another Super Bowl, where they were outclassed by the Eagles. <p>United States Ryder Cup captain Keegan Bradley made his highly anticipated selections Wednesday, and, to the surprise of some, did not choose himself to be the first playing captain since Arnold Palmer in 1963.</p><p>Bradley decided that being a full-time captain was more important to the success of the U.S. team than playing was. Picking himself meant there would be another deserving player left at home, and Bradley's form, while good enough to be considered for the team, wasn't drastically better than any of the other candidates.</p><p>You could argue both sides: Bradley acting as a playing captain may have provided a huge spark to the raucous crowd at Bethpage. It also would've distracted him from his duty to lead the team.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>Bradley was put in a tricky position by being named the 2025 captain while still competing at a very high level. When he accepted the captaincy, he said he would only play if he managed to qualify automatically. Despite winning the Travelers Championship and having a strong finish to the 2025 season, Bradley kept his word, which must have been a tough pill to swallow, especially after his heartbreaking omission from the 2023 team was shared so publicly on Netflix's "Full Swing" docuseries.</p><p>While it was a difficult one to make, sitting out is the correct decision. By calling his own number, Bradley would be piling immense pressure on himself during an event that already carries a ton of weight. He only finished 11th on the points list, which wasn't quite high enough for him to go against his word and pick himself. There were also a couple of Americans who turned it on late and played their way onto the team.</p><p>It's unfortunate to think that if the captain were anybody else, Bradley would likely be representing the United States, something he's dreamed of doing again since his last Ryder Cup appearance in 2014. But instead, he put the team first and did what he thought was best to help the Americans win.</p><p>Bradley's captaincy and picks will ultimately be judged once the Ryder Cup is decided, and his choice to sit out will only be scrutinized if the U.S. loses at home.</p><p>For now, we can analyze the six players Bradley selected ahead of himself to assemble the best possible U.S. team to host the Europeans in late September.</p><p>First, here were the six automatic qualifiers:</p><ul>

Plus, his no-hat antics were the focal point of all the tension between the two sides at the 2023 Ryder Cup in Rome. </p><p>His playing style makes it easy for him to partner with anyone, and he has dominated alongside Xander Schauffele in recent team competitions. Yes, his results in major championships this year have been underwhelming, and that's why he sits 15th on the points list, but his recent form is too good to ignore.</p><p>Cantlay placed inside the top 15 in six of his final 11 tournaments, all of which came in signature or playoff events. He's played in two Ryder Cups, holding a 5-2-1 record, and three Presidents Cups. Rather, it was his career resume and pedigree as one of the best American golfers in the world that gave him the edge over Bradley. </p><p>It may have felt strange to leave Morikawa at home, but it would have been with good reason. He finished the year ranked sixth on the PGA TOUR in scoring average and seventh in strokes gained: total. </p><p>He doesn't have the pedigree of his American teammates, but it would have been a mistake to leave Griffin off the roster.</p>

Spaun</a> or <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///pga/players/1700" href="https://thescore.com/pga/players/1700">Russell Henley</a> to fall out of the top six. Even if they do, Bradley won't leave them off the team.</p><p>The top six on the points list qualify automatically, leaving the remaining six spots up to the captain and his assistants. <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///pga/players/1747" href="https://thescore.com/pga/players/1747">Justin Thomas</a> and <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///pga/players/3135" href="https://thescore.com/pga/players/3135">Collin Morikawa</a> are having solid seasons, and combined with their history in team competitions, they'll be very hard to keep off the roster. This American side needs all the experience it can get, and both major champions bring that.</p><p><a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///pga/players/1643" href="https://thescore.com/pga/players/1643">Harris English</a> has also played his way onto the team. He was a runner-up to Scheffler at the PGA Championship and Open Championship, and he won at Torrey Pines early in the year. English played on the winning Ryder Cup team in 2021 and will have no trouble pairing with anyone on the USA roster, making him an ideal teammate.</p><p>That leaves four spots up for grabs, one of which Bradley will take. A playing captain was a possible outcome when Bradley was surprisingly announced as captain, and it'll become a reality. Whether Bradley gives up his captaincy or slides into a vice-captain role remains to be seen, but he's undoubtedly one of the 12 best American golfers.</p><p>Bradley has mentioned he doesn't want a lot of rookies in the Americans' quest to defeat the Europeans at home. That considerably reduces the options for the remaining three spots, two of which will likely go to <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///pga/players/1451" href="https://thescore.com/pga/players/1451">Patrick Cantlay</a> and <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///pga/players/1319" href="https://thescore.com/pga/players/1319">Sam Burns</a>. Cantlay is a stalwart in these team competitions, and his pairing with Schauffele has been very successful over the years. Outside of three missed cuts in majors, Cantlay is having a very consistent year, and his 5-2-1 Ryder Cup record is tough to ignore.</p><p>Burns nearly won the Canadian Open and played in the final pairing at the U.S. Open. His form has taken a turn for the better, and he's trending toward finishing inside the top 12 in points with a strong postseason. He played on two Presidents Cup teams and was on the losing Ryder Cup team in Rome. Burns' experience in team events carries a lot of weight.</p><p>Bradley could go anywhere with the final spot, but he should go with <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///pga/players/6328" href="https://thescore.com/pga/players/6328">Chris Gotterup</a>. That would bypass <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///pga/players/5287" href="https://thescore.com/pga/players/5287">Ben Griffin</a>, who's having a fabulous season, but injecting Gotterup into this lineup could be far more rewarding.</p><p>Perhaps recency bias after Gotterup's Scottish Open win and T3 at the Open Championship is playing a role, but it's hard to ignore his potential upside. Gotterup is a perfect fit for Bethpage Black as one of the PGA TOUR's longest hitters while also leading the TOUR in greens-in-regulation percentage. He might bring his elite form stateside and go on a run through the FedEx Cup Playoffs too.</p><p>Griffin may be the safer selection, but Gotterup is far more likely to be on future Ryder Cup teams. There's an argument to be made that Rahm should be priced much closer to Scheffler and McIlroy, so there could be some value backing the Spaniard.</p><p>Bryson DeChambeau and the Open Championship do not seem like a great match, and history bears that out. <p><a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///pga/players/6328" href="https://thescore.com/pga/players/6328">Chris Gotterup</a> went toe to toe with <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///pga/players/599" href="https://thescore.com/pga/players/599">Rory McIlroy</a> in the final group of the Scottish Open on Sunday and took down the reigning Masters champion to secure the biggest win of his young career, a result that some found shocking.</p><p>But painting it as a David versus Goliath victory understates Gotterup's pedigree and potential. The 25-year-old didn't come out of nowhere and is far from a fluke, even though he's largely unknown to the casual golf fan.</p><p>Gotterup does, however, offer an example of how challenging it is for a top amateur to make a name for themselves. Playing opportunities in majors and on big stages - like teeing it up alongside McIlroy at the Scottish Open - are few and far between, making his ability to capitalize on the moment even more impressive.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>Let's take a look at Gotterup's golf journey, figure out what made him capable of beating McIlroy across the pond, and forecast what this victory could do for his career trajectory.</p><h3>College years</h3><p>The New Jersey native attended Rutgers in his home state for his first four years of eligibility - a school not exactly known for its golf program or producing PGA TOUR players. It took a while for Gotterup to find his footing in college golf. Once he did, he earned Big Ten Player of the Year honors in the 2019-20 season and then transferred to Oklahoma for his last year of college.</p><p>Gotterup cleaned up as a Sooner. He won the Fred Haskins Award (other recent winners include Ludvig Aberg and Sahith Theegala) as college golf's most outstanding player, the Jack Nicklaus Award (which also recognizes the best college golfer), and Big 12 Player of the Year honors for the 2021-22 season.</p><p>He also finished T7 at the 2022 Puerto Rico Open as an amateur, an early sign that he could compete on the PGA TOUR.</p><h3>Early pro career</h3><p>Gotterup earned conditional status on the Korn Ferry Tour through the PGA TOUR University program, an initiative that grants top-ranked college golfers status on either the PGA TOUR or Korn Ferry Tour. He placed T4 at the 2022 John Deere Classic in his fourth start as a professional, but he didn't earn enough FedEx Cup points in his handful of 2022 PGA TOUR starts to earn a full-time membership for the following season.</p><p>Like most top prospects, Gotterup still outgrew the Korn Ferry Tour relatively quickly.<strong> </strong>He didn't win in his lone season on the feeder tour, but he earned enough points to secure a full-time PGA TOUR card for 2024.</p><p>Much like his slow start in college, he struggled to find consistency in his first year. Despite the victory, Gotterup failed to make the FedEx Cup Playoffs in his first full TOUR season.</p><h3>What changed?</h3><p>The beginning of Gotterup's 2025 season felt like a rerun - he missed seven cuts in his first 10 starts. Then something changed.</p><p>He's always been a power player, ranking fifth in driving distance on the PGA TOUR in 2024 and eighth this season. But it takes much more than distance to be successful, and Gotterup's improved approach play has been the key to taking the next step.</p><p>In those first 10 starts, Gotterup lost 0.37 strokes on approach per tournament; in his last eight, he's gained 1.13 strokes per tournament, which is 1.5-shot swing per event. He also ranks second on the PGA TOUR in greens-in-regulation percentage (71.23%) this year. Gotterup's elite distance and improved iron play have transfomed him into one of the best ball-strikers on TOUR - he's third behind Scottie Scheffler and Daniel Berger in strokes gained: ball-striking (off the tee plus approach) over the past 24 rounds.</p><p>It should have come as no surprise that Gotterup didn't flinch playing in the final group of the Scottish Open. He's one of the few players in the world who can keep up with McIlroy's intimidating distance off the tee, and he also turned in the best putting week of his career.</p><h3>What's next?</h3><p>It's not totally outrageous to suggest Gotterup has a chance at making the American Ryder Cup team that'll head to Bethpage Black at the end of September.</p><p>Gotterup ranks 41st in points, so he'll need to make some serious noise at the Open Championship this week and then carry that momentum into a deep FedEx Cup Playoffs run. But based on his current form, collecting at least one more win isn't out of the question.</p><p>His length off the tee makes him an ideal fit for Bethpage. Distance and power used to be one of the Americans' strengths, but the European team has surpassed them in that area. Gotterup would bolster a roster that needs some distance to keep up with McIlroy, Aberg, and Jon Rahm.</p><p>Question marks at the back end of the American team work in Gotterup's favor as well. As it stands, there are six locks for the United States: Scheffler, Xander Schauffele, J.J. Spaun, Bryson DeChambeau, Justin Thomas, and Collin Morikawa. Where captain Keegan Bradley goes from there is a mystery.</p><p>Gotterup is ultimately unlikely to represent the United States at this Ryder Cup, but future appearances seem very possible. He shares a similar pedigree with all of the elite players that make Ryder Cup teams, and he's still getting his feet as a professional golfer.</p><p>The next logical step in his career is contending in a major championship. His next opportunity comes this week at Royal Portrush. Gotterup already shocked the golf world once in the United Kingdom, so don't be surprised if you see his name near the top of the leaderboard again.</p>
