Tiger to consult teammates before Presidents Cup player-captain call
Before Tiger Woods decides whether he'll be a player-captain for the U.S. team at the 2019 Presidents Cup, he wants to hear from the squad.
"This is something that we'll certainly talk about," Woods said on Monday, according to ESPN's Bob Harig. "Ultimately it will be my call. But I want to have all their opinions before that decision is made."
"My job as captain is to put together the best team possible," Woods added. "Trying to put together the best 12 guys. We'll be going through the whole process of having communication with the top eight guys and vice captains."
The first eight American automatic qualifiers for the tournament were named on Sunday, with Brooks Koepka, Justin Thomas, Dustin Johnson, Patrick Cantlay, Xander Schauffele, Webb Simpson, Matt Kuchar, and Bryson DeChambeau getting the nod.
Woods will pick the remaining four members of the team with the help of vice captains Steve Stricker, Fred Couples, and Zach Johnson.
Tiger looked poised to become the first playing captain since 1994 after winning the Masters in April. But following his triumph at Augusta, Woods missed two cuts, withdrew from The Northern Trust due to an oblique injury, and failed to qualify for the Tour Championship at East Lake.
This year's Presidents Cup takes place Dec. 11-15 in Melbourne, Australia.
