Rickie Fowler has never been afraid to push the envelope when it comes to on-course fashion. Now his eccentric style has leaked into his equipment.

The 31-year-old put a new patterned golf ball in play for the first time in his career Thursday at the Waste Management Phoenix Open. Fowler helped design the ball's graphics, which feature his trademark Sunday orange in a nod to his alma mater, Oklahoma State.

Fowler's putter was the lone bright spot during Round 1 of his title defense at TPC Scottsdale. He shot 3-over 74, gaining close to half a stroke putting while losing nearly four shots tee to green.

His second round begins Friday at 10:00 a.m. ET.
