Defensive end Chase Young isn't overly concerned after the Washington Commanders opted not to pick up the fifth-year option in his rookie contract.

"Since I came in the game, I was in the game to prove myself," Young told reporters Tuesday, according to NFL.com's Nick Shook. "So I'm not really thinking anything different. Going out there and playing my game."

Young made a strong impression in his rookie season, recording 44 tackles, 10 tackles for loss, 7.5 sacks, and four forced fumbles. The Ohio State product won Defensive Rookie of the Year and was named to the Pro Bowl.

The 24-year-old played in three games last season after tearing his ACL and patellar tendon in his right knee in November 2021. Despite making his return to the field last season, Young says he feels a "night and day" difference as he preps for the 2023 season.

"I feel good," Young said. "I think my teammates know when I come out on the field, I'm gonna bring the juice. Something I've always done."

He says he's choosing to focus on himself and not worry about his status with the franchise ahead of a contract year. Head coach Ron Rivera agreed with the defensive star's sentiments.

"Well, I think the biggest thing as far as he's concerned more than anything else is just being healthy," Rivera said
