Bucs' Bowles: Loss to Chiefs 'didn't come down to' not going for 2 late
Head coach Todd Bowles doesn't blame the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' 30-24 overtime loss to the Kansas City Chiefs on not going for a two-point conversion late in the game.
"We wanted to get into overtime with the wet conditions on the field. We thought we had to go into overtime instead of going for two," Bowles said after the prime-time defeat, per ESPN's Jenna Laine. "We had our shots. We lost the game."
The Buccaneers drove down the field in 10 plays, scoring a touchdown to get them within one point of the Chiefs with 27 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter. Tampa Bay elected to kick the extra point to tie the score rather than attempt a two-point conversion to take the lead.
"We went for one," Bowles said. "We took our shots. We had our chances all game. We just lost the game. It didn't come down to that."
Kansas City didn't move the ball effectively in the final moments of regulation, but it won the overtime coin toss and engineered its own 10-play drive that culminated in a walk-off touchdown for Kareem Hunt.
The Chiefs improved to 8-0 with the victory, while Tampa Bay dropped to 4-5. The Buccaneers sit second in the NFC South behind the 6-3 Atlanta Falcons as they prepare for a Week 10 showdown with the San Francisco 49ers.
"It's tough. You don't take anything from it but a loss," the 60-year-old coach said. "And we can't get used to losing, and that's the biggest thing. We're not going to get used to losing. ... We fought, but it wasn't good enough, so we got to get ready next week for another one."
