Report: Saints hiring Brandon Staley as DC
The New Orleans Saints are hiring former Los Angeles Chargers head coach Brandon Staley as their defensive coordinator, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports.
Saints head coach Kellen Moore worked under Staley as the Chargers' offensive coordinator during the 2023 season. The 42-year-old will return the favor by serving as Moore's defensive play-caller in New Orleans.
Staley led the Chargers to a 24-24 record over three campaigns. L.A. dismissed him after Week 15 in 2023 after a 5-9 mark. He was an assistant head coach with the San Francisco 49ers last season.
Noted for his work on the defensive side of the ball, Staley helped orchestrate a stingy unit for the Los Angeles Rams during the 2020 campaign. He oversaw a talented group headlined by future Hall of Famers Aaron Donald and Jalen Ramsey.
Staley adds another veteran presence to Moore's staff after New Orleans reportedly hired former Philadelphia Eagles quarterbacks coach Doug Nussmeier as its offensive coordinator.
The Saints surrendered 23.4 points per game last season. New Orleans also allowed 141.4 rushing yards per contest over the 2024 campaign, ranking the team 31st in the league.
