Commanders releasing DT Jonathan Allen

The Washington Commanders have released defensive tackle Jonathan Allen, the team announced Friday.

Washington had reportedly granted the two-time Pro Bowler permission to seek a trade earlier this offseason. Allen was entering the final season of a four-year, $72-million contract.

The 30-year-old appeared in eight games last season while dealing with a torn pectoral muscle. He tallied 19 tackles and three sacks, his fewest since 2020. Allen added six tackles across three postseason contests during the team's run to the NFC Championship Game.

The Commanders still have a pair of high-draft defensive tackles in 2018 first-rounder Daron Payne and 2024 second-round pick Jer'Zhan Newton.

Allen spent eight years with the franchise after being selected in the first round of the 2017 draft. He's totaled 42 sacks and 60 tackles for loss in 109 games.
