Canada's Felix Auger-Aliassime and Gabriela Dabrowski won bronze in Olympic mixed doubles tennis on Friday, beating Dutch pair Demi Schuurs and Wesley Koolhof 6-3, 7-6 (2) for the country's first tennis medal since 2000.
Canada won its only other Olympic tennis medal in Sydney when Sebastien Lareau and Daniel Nestor struck gold in 2000.
Auger-Aliassime had enough steam to compete despite losing a chance to play for gold in men's singles hours earlier in Paris with a straight-sets defeat to Spain's Carlos Alcaraz.
But the swift turnaround seemed to have little effect on Auger-Aliassime, who won and saved points from back court and served up two aces. The 23-year-old was playing in his 10th match at the Olympics and fourth in just two days. Auger-Aliassime also competed in men's doubles but lost in the first round on Monday.
He'll play for the bronze medal in singles on Saturday against Italy's Lorenzo Musetti.
Auger-Aliassime and Dabrowski needed just 35 minutes to take the first set and appeared poised for an easy victory after going up 3-0 in the second. But the Dutch won six of the next nine games to force a second-set tiebreaker. The Canadians ran away with it after that.
