<p>The Los Angeles Chargers ended the first half of Thursday's victory over the Denver Broncos with one of the rarest plays in football.</p><p><a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nfl/players/174645" href="https://thescore.com/nfl/players/174645">Cameron Dicker</a> nailed a 57-yard fair catch kick to cut the Chargers' deficit to 21-13 at the end of the second quarter.</p><p>The fair catch kick rule allows a team that's just made a fair catch to attempt a free kick from the spot of the catch. The attempt can't be blocked, and, if converted, it's worth three points.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>"It's my favorite rule. "When Cameron Dicker made it, it got the momentum back. This was our chance."</p><p>Veteran Chargers edge rusher <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nfl/players/33866" href="https://thescore.com/nfl/players/33866">Khalil Mack</a> admitted he had no idea what was going on when his team lined up for the fair catch kick at the end of the second quarter, per <a href="https://x.com/LindseyThiry/status/1869967386302128375">Thiry</a>.</p><p>Dicker <a href="https://x.com/LindseyThiry/status/1869966563451056623">said</a> he wasn't aware of the rare kick until joining the Chargers in 2022 along with special teams coordinator Ryan Ficken.</p><p>New England Patriots kicker <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nfl/players/88282" href="https://thescore.com/nfl/players/88282">Joey Slye</a> was previously the last player to attempt a fair catch kick in 2019 as a member of the Carolina Panthers. However, no one had converted it since Ray Wersching drilled a 45-yard attempt in 1976 with the then-San Diego Chargers.</p><p>Dicker added that Ficken and his players watch Slye's 60-yard attempt from 2019 every Friday, according to <a href="https://x.com/krisrhim1/status/1869965910066552990">Kris Rhim of ESPN</a>.</p><p>Only seven of the 27 recorded NFL fair catch kicks have been converted. Dicker's 57-yarder is the longest successful fair catch kick in pro football history, topping Paul Hornung's 52-yard kick back in 1964.</p><p>This wasn't the first fair catch kick for Harbaugh, who also had the San Francisco 49ers attempt one back in 2013. Phil Dawson didn't convert his 71-yard attempt at the end of the second quarter.</p><p>Broncos head coach Sean Payton said at halftime that his team practices fair catch kicks, according to <a href="https://x.com/BenjaminSolak/status/1869935984382824522">ESPN's Benjamin Solak</a>.</p><p>Dicker's rare conversion quickly went viral on social media and generated immediate reactions from several NFLers, including future Hall of Fame defensive end J.J. <p>Dallas Cowboys linebacker <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nfl/players/161667" href="https://thescore.com/nfl/players/161667">Micah Parsons</a> is expected to sign a lucrative long-term contract in the upcoming offseason, but resetting the market among NFL defenders isn't a must for him.</p><p>"I don't need $40 million per year," Parsons said Thursday, according to <a href="https://www.wfaa.com/article/sports/nfl/cowboys/dallas-cowboys-micah-parsons-contract/287-53b57c90-20a7-4d72-8371-38cec286ee42">Ed Werder of WFAA</a>.</p><p>Instead, Parsons hopes the Cowboys can improve their roster and keep other starters on the team.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>"It would just be nice to be surrounded by good players," Parsons added. "I mean, players that's going to help you win championships. ... To me, having $40 million and being chipped every play and hit with two, with three, four people, I don't think that sounds too fun to me. So, to me, it's about people that can keep making a difference."</p><p>Parsons is scheduled to make $21.4 million in 2025, the fifth year of his rookie deal. </p><p>San Francisco 49ers defensive end <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nfl/players/111907" href="https://thescore.com/nfl/players/111907">Nick Bosa</a> is currently the NFL's highest-paid defender with an average annual salary of $34 million. The 29-year-old also dealt with an ankle issue during the postseason in January 2023 but managed to play through it and led the Chiefs to a Super Bowl LVII victory over the Philadelphia Eagles.</p><p>Kansas City signed Wentz in April to serve as Mahomes' backup. The 31-year-old, who has 93 NFL starts under his belt, attempted his first two passes of the season in his relief appearance versus Cleveland.</p><p>The 13-1 Chiefs are the AFC's No. 1 seed and have already clinched the AFC West title. The Boise State star had 344 carries for 2,497 rushing yards and 29 TDs in 2024. He's just 132 yards short of passing Barry Sanders' FBS season rushing record. Jeanty had at least 125 yards on the ground in every contest this season, failed to score just once, and posted 200 yards six times. We'll remember his 2024 campaign for a long time.</p><p><em>Other finalists: Omarion Hampton (North Carolina), Kaleb Johnson (Iowa)</em></p><h3>Outland Trophy (best interior lineman)</h3><p><strong>Winner: Kelvin Banks Jr., OT, Texas</strong></p><p>Banks showed why he'll likely be a first-round pick in the NFL draft, posting another excellent season with the Longhorns in their first year in the SEC. The 63-year-old joined Indiana after the 2023 season and made a huge impact, helping the school post a shocking 11-1 record in 2024 just a year after winning only three games. The Hoosiers started the campaign 10-0 and only lost to Ohio State before securing the school's first-ever 11-win season and a spot in the College Football Playoff.</p><h3>Ray Guy Award (best punter)</h3><p><strong>Winner: Eddie Czaplicki, USC</strong></p><p>Czaplicki became USC's first Ray Guy Award winner after finishing the 2024 season ranked second in the country for net yards per punt (45.7). The 28-year-old made his return Oct. 20 this season, and he's since appeared in seven games.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>Chubb's production in 2024 hasn't been up to his standards, as he's recorded 93 carries for 291 yards and three touchdowns. He's posted only 3.1 yards per rushing attempt after not averaging fewer than 5 yards per carry in any of his first six NFL seasons.</p><p>With Chubb slowly trying to regain his best form and the 3-10 Browns eliminated from playoff contention, it's been speculated that resting Chubb for the remainder of the 2024 season would be the best option for the two sides. However, that doesn't seem to be even an option for the veteran tailback.</p><p>"I have a long way to go before I shut anything down," Chubb added. "Every time I go out there, it's practice reps, game reps, it's me just getting better physically, mentally, all around, so I'm nowhere near shutting it down. Not even a thought."</p><p>Chubb, a second-round pick in 2018, ranks third in Browns history with 6,802 rushing yards and 51 touchdowns on the ground.</p>

The 1982 Defensive Player of the Year seemingly refused to shake hands with the three-time NFL MVP and questioned Favre about his behavior while taking a sack from former New York Giants defensive end Michael Strahan in the final game of the 2001 regular season.</p><p>Strahan reached 22.5 sacks that year on the play, passing Gastineau's 22 sacks in 1984 to set a new NFL single-season record against Favre's Green Bay Packers. He's averaged 9 yards per touch this season, down from 11.5 in 2023.</p><p>The veteran wideout has also recorded a 39.1% success rate in 2024, the first time he's under 40% in that category in a single season, according to Pro Football Reference. A <a href="https://www.sports-reference.com/blog/2023/09/success-rate-comes-to-pro-football-reference/">successful reception</a> is defined as a play that gains at least 40% of the yards required on first down, 60% of the yards required on second down, and 100% on third- or fourth-down situations.</p><p>"We'd always love things to stay in house," Shanahan said. "That's probably why I don't mess with social media. I'm sure I'd get worked up and stuff too if I was reading stuff about myself all the time. And then I'd maybe make a tweet or something."</p><p>The 49ers, who are 6-7, host the 7-6 Los Angeles Rams on Thursday. Samuel missed San Francisco's loss to Los Angeles in September because of a calf injury.</p>
