<p>Manager Pep Guardiola cleared the air over his future Thursday by signing a new two-year contract extension with Manchester City, the club announced.</p><p>"Manchester City means so much to me," he <a href="https://www.mancity.com/news/mens/pep-guardiola-new-contract-manchester-city-63867814">said</a>.</p><p>"This is my ninth season here; we have experienced so many amazing times together. I have a really special feeling for this football club. </p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>"That is why I am so happy to be staying for another two more seasons."</p><p>Guardiola will have spent more than a decade in charge of the English club when his new deal expires in 2027.</p><p>His current contract was set to expire after the end of the season in June 2025.</p><p>"I have said this many times before, but I have everything a manager could ever wish for, and I appreciate that so much," Guardiola added.</p><p>"Hopefully, now we can add more trophies to the ones we have already won. That will be my focus."</p><p>Guardiola is already the most successful coach in Manchester City's history. <p>Head coach Bev Priestman and assistant coach Jasmine Mander "directed, approved, and condoned" the use of drones to illegally film New Zealand's team practices ahead of the Canadian women's national team's opening game at the Paris Olympics, according to a summary of an independent investigation <a href="https://canada-soccer-pressroom.prezly.com/canada-soccer-releases-findings-of-independent-investigation-organizational-change-continues">released</a> by Canada Soccer on Tuesday.</p><p>Canada Soccer adds Priestman and Mander "will not be returning" after they serve one-year suspensions that were issued by FIFA last summer.</p><p>"The search for a new head coach for the women's national team will commence shortly," the statement reads.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>The investigation also found that players didn't view drone footage.</p><p>Assistant coach Joey Lombardi was caught by French authorities in July after he attempted to fly a drone over New Zealand's practice on two occasions. Lombardi didn't cooperate with the investigation conducted by Toronto lawyer Sonia Regenbogen, and it's understood that he resigned from his role, according to <a href="https://www.tsn.ca/soccer/canada-soccer-coaches-organized-spying-with-drones-investigation-concludes-1.2203840">TSN's Rick Westhead</a></p><p>Canada Soccer apologized for the incident at the time and Priestman said she wouldn't be on the sidelines for the New Zealand game, which Canada won 2-1. Priestman and the other coaches were sent home from Paris.</p><p>FIFA later banned the three for one year and docked Canada six points. Canada still made it out of the group stage, but was eliminated in the quarterfinals.</p><p>"The drone issue at the Paris Olympics was a disappointing revelation," Canada Soccer CEO Kevin Blue said.</p><p>"The findings of the independent investigator reveal that the incident itself was a symptom of a difficult and unacceptable past culture within the national teams.</p><p>"Quite simply, while players on the national teams performed admirably, cultural standards and management of the programs dating back several years fell short of expectations."</p><p>Canada Soccer added that it's "in the process of taking disciplinary steps" against individuals and that those actions "will be private."</p><p>Former Canada women's coach John Herdman, who's now in charge of Toronto FC, was unable to be interviewed during the investigation due to "scheduling issues."</p><p>However, potential violations of Canada Soccer's code of conduct and ethics involving Herdman were uncovered during the probe.</p><p>"It's something that Sonia and John's representatives worked on, and I don't really have visibility into the specific situations as to why," Blue told TSN. "There was evidence gathered from witness statements and documentary review, as far as I understand, in the absence of a direct interview."</p><p>Herdman denied last summer ever spying on opponents when he was in charge of the Canadian women's team from 2011 to 2018.</p><p>The report says there's no evidence of drones being used during the 2020 Tokyo Olympics when Priestman's Canada team won its first gold medal in the women's soccer tournament.</p><p>Another finding is that the investigation could not substantiate allegations of drone use by the Canada's men's team at this year's Copa America. The executive summary states that a drone suspected of filming a training session at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex did not contain any actual footage. The men's team claimed a staff member was operating the drone above an empty pitch "for the purposes of a motivational and promotional video."</p><p>Men's coach Jesse Marsch seemed to express sympathy for Priestman in a text he sent to her while the drone scandal was erupting in Paris. "We went through it as well," he wrote, referring to the alleged incident involving the men's team in Orlando.</p>

But their lack of creativity after conceding right before halftime was the real reason they lost. In the tournaments of old, a newcomer like Brest, who had never qualified for the Champions League, would've been buried at the bottom of a group of heavyweights with zero chance of progressing. They would've simply enjoyed the ride. But here they are in fourth place in the Champions League table with 10 points out of a possible 12 after Wednesday's 2-1 win over Sparta Prague. Those 10 points should be enough for Brest to earn at least a playoff spot, according to Opta's projections. But with matches to come against 24th-placed PSV Eindhoven and 28th-placed Shakhtar Donetsk, Brest could reasonably finish with the 16 points likely necessary to earn automatic qualification to the knockout round. UEFA expanded the tournament to make it more profitable, but in a weird way, it has offered previously overlooked teams a lifeline.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p><strong>Gianluca Nesci</strong>: Matchday 4 was a turning point in the competition. One of the biggest gripes about the new format, aside from fixture congestion and general resistance to change, was that the supersized opening round created less jeopardy for the top clubs, which had more time to recover from any setback because there were simply more points available. Even when some stumbled early, there was no sense of panic. That's changing now. Pep Guardiola's side is in panic mode after getting pummeled by Sporting CP. Manchester City's long list of injuries was a major talking point heading into the encounter, and rightfully so with stars like Rodri missing and Kevin De Bruyne not fit enough to start. But that didn't make Tuesday's 4-1 scoreline any less shocking. City did well to get back into the game, threatening to cut the deficit down to one goal before disaster struck when Erling Haaland's penalty rattled off the crossbar. Heads went down and the team showed an uncharacteristic lack of fight on its way to losing three straight games in a season for the first time since April 2018. Is this the beginning of City's downfall? Highly unlikely. But it presents a rare opportunity for rivals to take advantage of a City side that won't likely be down for long.</p><p><strong>Lopopolo</strong>: Real Madrid. Carlo Ancelotti is on the hot seat after losing back-to-back matches at home to Barcelona and AC Milan. They conceded seven goals across the pair of games and looked entirely out of sorts in Tuesday's 3-1 defeat to Serie A's seventh-placed team. Kylian Mbappe doesn't look comfortable alongside Vinicius Junior, and Dani Carvajal's injury-enforced absence has allowed opponents to wreak havoc on Madrid's right flank. Jude Bellingham hasn't scored for Madrid in 177 days and seems unsure how to interpret his deeper midfield role. It doesn't get any easier for Los Blancos: Liverpool and Atalanta are up next, and they only have one more game to play at home. With just six points in the bag, Madrid have to win at least two of their final four games just to have a chance to make the playoffs.</p><p><strong>Nesci</strong>: RB Leipzig. A last-second away loss to Atletico Madrid on Matchday 1? Aggravating, but not panic inducing. Blowing a lead, at home, against 10-man Juventus and losing? Rough, but it was one of "those" games. Falling to Liverpool, the best team in the tournament so far? No shame in that. But Leipzig followed up those results by getting outplayed - and comfortably beaten - by Celtic in a match they badly needed to have in order to keep their dwindling hopes of reaching the knockout stage alive. <em>That</em> is cause for serious concern. Leipzig are one of only five teams in the competition without a point. Instead of tussling with Europe's elite, their peers at the bottom of the table are the likes of Slovan Bratislava and Sturm Graz. The Swedish striker is finally getting the recognition he deserves. After more than a year of tormenting defenses in Portugal, it took scoring a hat-trick against Manchester City in Tuesday's Champions League win for the spotlight to <em>truly</em> beam on Gyokeres. While everyone's been in awe watching Haaland score at a record-setting pace in England, the 26-year-old Gyokeres has mastered his craft at Sporting to become one of the most prolific strikers in the world. He went from scoring 21 goals for Championship side Coventry City in 2022 to more than doubling that amount with 43 goals in his debut season for Sporting. And he's showing no signs of slowing down. Recording his third hat-trick of the season Tuesday gives him 23 goals in 17 games and launched him into a share of the lead atop the Champions League scoring chart with five tallies.</p><p><strong>Lopopolo</strong>: Luis Diaz. The Colombian's evolution continued Tuesday with a hat-trick performance against Bayer Leverkusen, the first of his professional career and the strongest evidence yet that he can lead Liverpool's attack. A left-winger by trade, Diaz has played more centrally under head coach Arne Slot and reminded fans of Roberto Firmino with the way he hustled and pounced on opportunities in Liverpool's 4-0 win. Diaz chipped the 'keeper like he had done it a million times before, shrugged off his marker at the far post to score, and finished off an odd-man rush to complete the hat-trick. He can hurt opponents, and if he plays centrally, Slot can shelter Darwin Nunez on the wing where he'll have less pressure to score.</p><p><strong>Nesci</strong>: Edon Zhegrova. A baller, pure and simple. The winger was at his dynamic best in Tuesday's 1-1 draw with Juventus, setting up Jonathan David's first-half goal with one of his many mesmerizing runs and incisive passes. The 25-year-old completed eight successful dribbles in the match, continually twisting Juan Cabal into a pretzel until the Juve left-back was mercifully substituted after chasing Zhegrova's shadow around for over an hour. After dominating Bayern Munich before a 4-0 thrashing of Real Madrid in El Clasico, there's no reason why Barcelona can't claim top spot in the revamped opening round of the Champions League. That belief is boosted by a run of games against manageable opponents - aside from Atalanta - over the remaining five matches. - <em>Gordon Brunt</em></p><h3>2. <a id="Liverpool" name="Liverpool">Liverpool</a> 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿</h3><p><strong>Previous rank:</strong> 1 📉</p><p>Arne Slot has a more pragmatic approach than his predecessor, Jurgen Klopp - and he's delivering. But this still feels like the end of an era, where the Dutchman is trying to find out which players he'll be working with next season. Trent Alexander-Arnold, Mohamed Salah, and Virgil van Dijk are all out of contract in June 2025, and their exits leave Slot and sporting director Richard Hughes with a nightmarish summer on Merseyside. - <em>Daniel Rouse</em></p><h3>3. <a id="Real Madrid" name="Real%20Madrid">Real Madrid</a> 🇪🇸</h3><p><strong>Previous rank:</strong> 2 📉</p><p>The goals haven't piled up for Kylian Mbappe like he would've expected after last summer's blockbuster transfer to Real Madrid. Joining the Champions League holders was supposed to turn Real Madrid into an unbeatable powerhouse. But the wins and the goals haven't materialized ... yet. Eight goals in 14 games is admirable for most players, but Mbappe has set the bar so high that his output this season is a bit of a letdown. His lackluster first season in Spain will persist, with Mbappe's frustrations leading to a career low in goals. - <em>Brunt</em></p><h3>4. <a id="Man City" name="Man%20City">Manchester City</a> 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿</h3><p><strong>Previous rank:</strong> 4 ⚖️</p><p>Aymeric Laporte's arrival in January 2018 marked the last time Manchester City struck an expensive midseason deal. A range of factors indicate City will make a huge splash in the transfer market in two months, including last summer's low spend, Rodri's long-term injury, the lack of backup for Erling Haaland, and the likes of Matheus Nunes and James McAtee making unconvincing cases for regular starts. Vincent Kompany's men were hammering inferior opponents early on. But when Bayern started to get tested, the German giants crumbled. While they'll likely go on to win another Bundesliga title, they'll only do so because they were afforded more time to focus on domestic duties after an early elimination from the Champions League in the round of 16. - <em>Brunt</em></p><h3>6. <a id="PSG" name="PSG">Paris Saint-Germain</a> 🇫🇷</h3><p><strong>Previous rank:</strong> 7 📈</p><p>Predicting Paris Saint-Germain will limp out of the Champions League knockout rounds after some naivety or chaos isn't bold. So let's up the ante: PSG won't emerge from the league phase. With four points from three matches, they're three points adrift of the qualification spots and only have a one-point cushion in the playoff places. Their next opponents? Atletico Madrid and Bayern Munich this month - and those two need results - before meetings with Red Bull Salzburg, Manchester City, and Stuttgart. - <em>Rouse</em></p><h3>7. <a id="Atalanta" name="Atalanta">Atalanta</a> 🇮🇹</h3><p><strong>Previous rank:</strong> N/A 📈</p><p>If Atalanta taught us anything over the years, it's to never discount Gian Piero Gasperini's squad. They've consistently finished in the top 10 in Serie A since he took over in 2016. That success hasn't resulted in silverware at home, but it's opened the doors to Europe. After winning the club's first continental trophy in the Europa League last season, Atalanta will have their sights on the ultimate prize: the Champions League. They won't go all the way, but Atalanta are going to solidify their reputation as a European force with a run to the semifinals. - <em>Brunt</em></p><h3>8. <a id="Napoli" name="Napoli">Napoli</a> 🇮🇹</h3><p><strong>Previous rank:</strong> 17 📈</p><p>A humbling defeat to Atalanta wasn't an ideal way for Napoli to kick off a crucial juncture in their season. Antonio Conte's side conceded more goals (three) to Atalanta than it did in the previous eight games combined. But the defeat wasn't enough to knock Napoli off their perch atop the Serie A table. The defense will bounce back from Sunday's lopsided loss and prove vital again in helping Napoli win another surprise Scudetto. Their failure to qualify for Europe last season will benefit a Napoli side that can focus solely on winning Serie A for the second time in three years. - <em>Brunt</em></p><h3>9. <a id="Arsenal" name="Arsenal">Arsenal</a> 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿</h3><p><strong>Previous rank:</strong> 5 📉</p><p>Martin Odegaard's long-awaited return from injury won't be enough to save Arsenal's season. After their promising title bid in 2023-24, a lack of discipline and underperforming players this term have contributed to Arsenal's regression. Forget mounting a title bid, Mikel Arteta's men won't qualify for the Champions League next season at this rate. <p>Manchester United's search for a new head coach ended Friday with the appointment of Ruben Amorim, the Premier League club announced.</p><p>The Portuguese coach joins from Sporting CP on a three-year contract that includes an option for an additional year. He'll officially join his new club Nov. 11.</p><p>Interim Manchester United coach Ruud van Nistelrooy will be in charge for the next three games, including Sunday's Premier League clash against Chelsea. The Dutch coach has been in charge since coach Erik ten Hag was fired Oct. 28.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>Manchester United decided to cut ties with Ten Hag after their defeat to West Ham United last weekend. The Red Devils are in 14th place after nine league games.</p><p>Sporting CP revealed earlier this week that Manchester United had triggered the €10-million release clause in Amorim's contract.</p><p>Amorim's first game in charge of United will be an away match against newly promoted Ipswich on Nov. 24. His first home game is four days later against Bodo/Glimt in the Europa League.</p><p>Manchester United didn't announce who'll be on Amorim's coaching staff.</p><p>Amorim will be on the touchline for Sporting CP's league match Friday against Estrela. He then faces Premier League champions Manchester City in the Champions League in what will be his penultimate game at Sporting.</p><p>Manchester United describe Amorim as "one of the most exciting and highly rated young coaches in European football." He won Portugal's Primeira Liga title with Sporting CP in 2021 and last season.</p><p>The 39-year-old becomes the sixth permanent coach since legendary manager Sir Alex Ferguson retired in 2013.</p><p> </p>

Ten Hag, who actually had his contract extended in the summer amid much speculation about his future, guided the club to just four wins from 13 games across all competitions this season.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>"We are grateful to Erik for everything he has done during his time with us and wish him well for the future," the club said, adding that former striker Ruud van Nistelrooy, one of Ten Hag's assistants, will take over as interim coach while the search for a permanent replacement is conducted.</p><p>The club had hoped to give Ten Hag a full season to work under the new Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS setup, but finally lost faith in the manager's ability to turn things around, sources told <a href="https://www.espn.com/soccer/story/_/id/41528230/manchester-united-sack-erik-ten-hag-amid-poor-run-form">Rob Dawson of ESPN</a>.</p><p>A shortlist of around five potential permanent replacements is being analyzed, according to <a href="https://www.skysports.com/football/live-blog/12040/13025492/man-utd-transfer-news-rumours-and-gossip-live-updates-and-latest-on-deals-signings-loans-and-contracts?postid=8522138#liveblog-body">Melissa Reddy of Sky Sports</a>.</p><p>Manchester United opened the season with a win over Fulham but lost two of their next three league games. They then began a five-game winless run, which included a humiliating 0-0 draw against the Dutch coach's former team FC Twente and culminated with several toothless displays.</p><p>Ten Hag's firing comes on the heels of a wretched run in which United won just one of eight matches across all competitions.</p><p>In total, the Dutchman lost 27.3% of his games while in charge of the storied club despite significant backing in the transfer market. Manchester United spent over £600 million during his reign, with nearly half of that sum going toward former Ajax players with whom Ten Hag was familiar.</p><p>"The big shock for me is how bad they've been with the new signings that have come in," former Manchester United captain Gary Neville <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/football/live/2024/oct/28/erik-ten-hag-sacked-by-manchester-united-news-and-reaction-live?page=with:block-671f89308f08eb7baa5eb48c#block-671f89308f08eb7baa5eb48c">said</a>.</p><p>He added: "The fact that they are 14th is unacceptable. You can't be in 14th after nine or 10 games with the level of spend that's occurred without being under significant pressure - and that's what's happened."</p><p>Ten Hag signed a three-year contract to become Manchester United's coach in April 2022 after a successful spell at Ajax. He was the fifth permanent coach - and eighth overall - appointed after legendary manager Sir Alex Ferguson retired in 2013.</p><p>Ten Hag ended his first season on a positive note. He oversaw United's League Cup triumph - the club's first major trophy since 2017 - months before they sealed a Champions League berth by finishing third in the Premier League.</p><p>He also dealt with the unsavory departure of team legend <a href="https://thescore.com/natleaguea/players/1310">Cristiano Ronaldo</a> that season. The Portuguese superstar fell out with Ten Hag after criticizing the club and the coach in a revealing interview. Ronaldo ultimately left in late 2022 to play in Saudi Arabia.</p><p>The next season, United finished bottom of their Champions League group. They also regressed in the league, finishing a disappointing eighth, their lowest position in the top flight since 1990.</p><p>Ten Hag managed to end the season on a high, though, as United captured the FA Cup with a surprise win over rivals Manchester City at Wembley Stadium. That singular victory was largely credited with saving Ten Hag's job at the time amid swirling rumors about his future.</p><p>However, the club's failure to show meaningful progression continued this season and ultimately led to Ten Hag's departure. </p>
