<p>Now that the dust has settled on the 2026 NHL trade deadline, it's time to separate the winners and losers. Moves made in the days leading up to the deadline were factored in.</p><h3>Winners</h3><p><strong>Anaheim Ducks</strong></p><p>Bravo, Pat Verbeek. The Ducks general manager made arguably the best addition of the week, <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///news/3481703" href="https://thescore.com/news/3481703">acquiring</a> John Carlson from the Washington Capitals for a conditional first-round pick and a third-rounder in a stunner early Friday morning. Justin Faulk - albeit with an extra year of term - <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///news/3481712" href="https://thescore.com/news/3481712">went</a> for basically the same return despite being an obviously inferior player.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>Rather than spending second-round picks to improve the fringes of the roster, Verbeek went out and got a true difference-maker for not much more. The Ducks built up their prospect cupboard and draft-pick capital over the years to make a move like this.</p><p>Carlson fills Anaheim's biggest need as a right-shot defenseman who can play on the top pair and quarterback an underwhelming power play. The 36-year-old, who's recorded 46 points in 55 games this season, has aged like fine wine. While he's not as fleet of foot as he used to be, Carlson is still a highly effective player who raises Anaheim's floor and ceiling. He's a pending unrestricted free agent, but don't be shocked if he re-signs. (What veteran wouldn't given the state of the team?) For a while, it looked like it wouldn't happen, considering news of the trade didn't break until roughly an hour after the deadline. With Colorado having the same head coach and several of the same players from the 2022 team, Kadri should transition seamlessly. Plus, he gives the Avalanche an embarrassment of riches at center alongside Nathan MacKinnon, Brock Nelson, and Nicolas Roy.</p><p>Perry, meanwhile, is back in Tampa Bay on a Lightning squad that has the second-shortest odds to win the Stanley Cup. Although he won with the Ducks in 2007, Perry is likely salivating at the chance to get another ring after infamously being on the losing end of five of the last six Stanley Cup Finals, including one with Tampa in 2022. The 40-year-old is still an effective bottom-six forward, and the Lightning need depth.</p><p><strong>Early sellers</strong></p><p>Early reports that indicated it would be a buyer's market were quickly rebuffed by some of the moves executed in the days leading up to the deadline. Fourth-line-caliber centers (Michael McCarron, Nic Dowd) were shipped out for second-round picks. Third-line-caliber centers (Nicolas Roy, Jason Dickinson) got dealt for first-round picks. Third-pair-caliber defensemen (Connor Murphy, Tyler Myers, Logan Stanley, Luke Schenn) were traded for second-round picks and/or intriguing prospects.</p><p>Some deadline day returns for similar players weren't as fruitful. Notably, the Toronto Maple Leafs <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///news/3481713" href="https://thescore.com/news/3481713">receiving</a> only a conditional third-round pick for Scott Laughton was particularly underwhelming after they surrendered a first-rounder to acquire him last year.</p><p>The Winnipeg Jets <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///news/3481701" href="https://thescore.com/news/3481701">snagging</a> Isak Rosen from the Buffalo Sabres in exchange for Stanley and Schenn is one of my favorite returns of the late-season frenzy. The No. 14 pick in 2021, Rosen has been excellent in the AHL and could thrive with more opportunity in Winnipeg.</p><p>There's an evergreen theme among many of these transactions: No matter how much the game changes, playoff-bound teams love to add players with size, grit, and postseason pedigree around the deadline. If you're a rebuilding club, stock up on those types of players in the offseason and reap the benefits when contenders get desperate.</p><p><strong>Foligno brothers</strong></p><p>It must be incredibly special to play sports at the highest level alongside your sibling. Nick Foligno has spent 19 years in the NHL, and Marcus Foligno has suited up for 15, but the brothers had never been teammates in the pros until the Chicago Blackhawks <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///news/3481706" href="https://thescore.com/news/3481706">traded</a> Nick to the Minnesota Wild. Both players are chasing their first Stanley Cup and have a golden opportunity to win one together on a great team.</p><h3>Losers</h3><p><strong>Carolina Hurricanes</strong></p><p>The Hurricanes were in excellent position to make a splash but did nothing other than add some toughness to their fourth line in Nicolas Deslauriers. That's awfully disappointing for the Eastern Conference club, which entered the deadline with four first-round picks over the next three years, a strong farm system, and more cap space than any other contender.</p><p>While Carolina doesn't have any glaring holes, upgrading the second-line center spot should've been a priority. Can it win a Cup with 5-foot-8 sophomore Logan Stankoven in that role? He's likely better suited to play wing. Adding a goalie would've helped, too, given Brandon Bussi's inexperience and Frederik Andersen's struggles. A depth defenseman wouldn't have hurt either.</p><p>The Hurricanes have a pretty straightforward path to another Eastern Conference Final, considering how weak the rest of the Metropolitan Division is. With Carlson traded, Ovechkin is one of just two remaining members of Washington's 2018 Stanley Cup-winning squad. (I guess that makes Tom Wilson a lingering Carlton Banks.)</p><p>I hate to even associate the word "loser" with the NHL's all-time leading goal-scorer, but it's fitting for this exercise. The Capitals are four points out of a playoff spot and traded away a cornerstone player for draft picks. That has to be a gut punch for Ovechkin, who <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///news/3481709" href="https://thescore.com/news/3481709">called</a> it "probably the toughest day in my career." With Ovi's NHL future up in the air during the final year of his contract, it would be a shame to see him go out on a team playing meaningless games down the stretch.</p><p><strong>New York Rangers</strong></p><p>Prior to the deadline, I <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///news/3481720" href="https://thescore.com/news/3481720">wrote</a> that Chris Drury's top priority as Rangers GM should be regaining the fan base's trust after the disastrous Artemi Panarin trade. A great way to do that would've been getting a nice return for Vincent Trocheck. But Drury didn't trade him at all, creating more doubt as to whether he's the right person to lead the franchise through this retool/rebuild.</p><p>Trocheck is having a productive season, coming off an impressive performance at the Olympics, and signed to a fair contract through 2028-29, not to mention he's the type of two-way center who's typically coveted by playoff contenders. He's 32 years old, so it's possible his trade value will never be higher than it is now. Failing to move him seems like a missed opportunity, especially with there being several obvious landing spots, including the Hurricanes, Wild, and Boston Bruins.</p>

He's under contract for two more seasons after 2025-26 with a $6.5-million cap hit.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>The 34-year-old tallied 12 goals and 16 assists in 61 games with the Blues this season, putting him on pace for his worst statistical campaign in over a decade. He's also won 54.2% of his faceoffs. Schenn is a natural center, but he's also spent time playing wing throughout his 17-year career.</p><p>Schenn spent nine years in St. Louis, including three as the captain. He won a Stanley Cup with the club in 2019.</p><p>He's tallied 43 points in 82 career playoff games. The Islanders currently occupy third place in the Metropolitan Division.</p><p>Drouin has three goals and 18 assists in 55 games this season. The 30-year-old is signed through next season with a $4-million cap hit.</p><p>Gidlof was a fifth-round pick by the Islanders in 2024. The 6-foot-6 netminder has posted an .896 save percentage in 24 games in the SHL this season.</p>

He's arguably the greatest defenseman in club history. His 771 points are the most all-time among Capitals blue-liners and fifth among all skaters.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>However, the 36-year-old is a pending unrestricted free agent, and the Capitals are four points out of a playoff spot. He's less effective in his own end, though, as he's produced minus-3.1 defensive goals above replacement.</p><p>The Capitals drafted Carlson 27th overall in 2008. He also ranks second on the franchise leaderboard in games played (1,143), third in assists (605), and second in plus/minus (114).</p><p>Carlson's departure could signal the end of an era in Washington. The only players remaining on the roster from the 2018 Cup-winning squad are <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nhl/players/2592" href="https://thescore.com/nhl/players/2592">Tom Wilson</a> and captain <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nhl/players/1280" href="https://thescore.com/nhl/players/1280">Alex Ovechkin</a>, whose NHL future is up in the air with the final year of his contract nearing its end.</p>

The 36-year-old won back-to-back Stanley Cups with the Tampa Bay Lightning in 2020 and 2021.</p><p>Stanley projects to be Buffalo's No. 6 blue-liner, while Schenn likely provides depth as the seventh defenseman.</p><p>Rosen was drafted 14th overall by the Sabres in 2021, but he's appeared in just 31 career NHL games so far, collecting three goals and five assists. The 22-year-old winger has racked up 185 points in 231 career AHL games.</p><p>Bryson is a 28-year-old pending UFA defenseman. The 5-foot-9 blue-liner has spent his entire six-year career in Buffalo. He's managed five points in 35 games this season.</p>

<p>The fantasy football season ended months ago, but the action never completely halts in dynasty leagues. Here are five players you should consider trading for and five players you should consider trading away before NFL free agency gets underway in March.</p><h3>Buy 🎯</h3><p><strong>QB Malik Willis</strong></p><p>A weak quarterback draft class is great news for Willis. With Fernando Mendoza the only signal-caller guaranteed to hear his name called in Round 1, several other QB-needy teams will have to explore free agency.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>Willis, a pending free agent, is a safe bet to be a Week 1 starter somewhere, whether that's for the Jets, Dolphins, Steelers, Colts, Vikings, Falcons, or Cardinals. Still only 26 years old, he flashed potential in his lone start for the Packers last season. In Week 17 against the Ravens, Willis completed 18 of 21 passes for 288 yards with one touchdown and zero interceptions, plus another 60 yards on the ground with two scores.</p><p>The sample size is obviously limited, as Willis has attempted only 155 passes across his four-year career. However, his elite rushing upside could make him a fantasy star. If the manager in your league rostering Willis is deep at QB, they might be willing to move him for cheap.</p><p><strong>RB Omarion Hampton</strong></p><p>The price will be high, but don't be afraid to pony up if the manager in your league with Hampton is willing to consider trading him after an injury-plagued rookie season. Parting with a top-three pick in your 2026 rookie draft could be worth it.</p><p>Hampton totaled 737 scrimmage yards and five touchdowns in nine games as a rookie and ended up splitting time with Kimani Vidal after returning from injury in Week 14.</p><p>With a clean bill of health, Hampton could take off in 2026. It's highly unlikely the Chargers will be without both starting tackles - Rashawn Slater and Joe Alt - for most of the campaign as they were in 2025. Sharing the backfield with Zach Charbonnet, who handled most of the goal-line carries, limited Walker to five total touchdowns despite 1,309 scrimmage yards.</p><p>Walker, a pending free agent, could easily finish as a top-10 running back if he lands with a team that makes him the workhorse. With Charbonnet injured for most of the postseason, Walker exploded for 417 scrimmage yards and four touchdowns in three playoff games, capped by winning Super Bowl MVP.</p><p>Walker's talent is undeniable. All he needs is more opportunity.</p><p><strong>WR Justin Jefferson</strong></p><p>There may be no better chance to buy low on Jefferson than this offseason. It wasn't long ago that he was the consensus WR1 in dynasty leagues, but his value has cratered following his worst season.</p><p>Much of Jefferson's downturn stemmed from poor quarterback play from J.J. McCarthy, Carson Wentz, and Max Brosmer. However, the Vikings reportedly plan on adding a veteran signal-caller this offseason to compete with McCarthy. Even if McCarthy remains the starter, the 2024 No. 10 pick is bound to improve after a disappointing first year under center. Entering his age-27 season, look for Jefferson to bounce back.</p><p><strong>WR Matthew Golden</strong></p><p>Golden is coming off a highly disappointing rookie campaign, but he finished strong by catching four passes for 84 yards and a touchdown in the Packers' wild-card round loss to the Bears. That performance could serve as a spark for a second-year breakout.</p><p>Not all first-round wide receivers become stars immediately - look at Jaxon Smith-Njigba. Sometimes it takes time. Golden is an elite athlete and should see more opportunities next season with Romeo Doubs expected to depart in free agency.</p><h3>Sell 💸</h3><p><strong>QB Jalen Hurts</strong></p><p>Hurts is coming off a QB8 finish - his fifth straight year as a top-10 QB. But there are a lot of what-ifs that could lead to a decline in 2026. What if the Eagles trade star wideout A.J. Brown? What if left guard Landon Dickerson retires? What if head coach Nick Sirianni's newest offensive coordinator, Sean Mannion, is another whiff?</p><p>With all of those variables in play, if you can net a massive haul for a QB who turns 28 in August and relies heavily on his legs, you should do it.</p><p><strong>RB Jonathan Taylor</strong></p><p>Taylor finished as the RB2 in half-PPR leagues last season after racking up 1,963 scrimmage yards while leading the league with 323 carries and 20 touchdowns. As great as his year was, it's fair to wonder if he can repeat in 2026. Historically, NFL rushing attempt leaders struggle the following campaign, with Derrick Henry the lone exception.</p><ul>

<li>Josh Jacobs finishes second to Henry with 340 rushing attempts in 2022; RB27 in 2023</li>

<li>Saquon Barkley leads the NFL with 345 rushing attempts in 2024; RB14 in 2025</li>
</ul><p>Taylor will also remain with a Colts offense with major question marks at QB. Cook's smooth running style usually limits the amount of big hits he takes, as he's only missed one game across his four-year career.</p><p>However, starting guard David Edwards and starting center Connor McGovern are pending free agents for the Bills, who begin the offseason with minus-$9.8 million in cap space. The club also lost highly regarded offensive line coach Aaron Kromer to retirement this offseason. With an expected overhaul coming to the wide receiver room, Buffalo could rely less on Cook and more on the arm of Josh Allen in 2026. Cook's dynasty value may never be higher than it is now.</p><p><strong>WR Travis Hunter</strong></p><p>Hunter is <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///news/3478758" href="https://thescore.com/news/3478758">reportedly</a> expected to be a full-time cornerback and only a part-time wide receiver in 2026. This was always the concern with using a top-five pick on Hunter in rookie drafts. The move makes sense considering the Jaguars' pass defense struggled last year and could lose Greg Newsome in free agency. Meanwhile, the receiver room is crowded with Brian Thomas Jr., Jakobi Meyers, and Parker Washington under contract in 2026.</p><p>It's an unfortunate situation from a fantasy perspective, especially considering Hunter put together his best game with 101 yards on eight catches and a touchdown before suffering a season-ending injury in Week 7. But if Hunter managers can cash out for a late first-round pick in 2026 or 2027 rookie drafts - or near equal value - don't hesitate.</p><p><strong>TE Kyle Pitts</strong></p><p>Pitts finished as the TE2 in 2025, giving managers a strong negotiating point. But it's fair to wonder if that's remotely repeatable after digging deeper into the numbers.</p><p>In the five games receiver Drake London missed due to injury, Pitts averaged seven receptions, 84.4 yards, and 0.6 touchdowns. In the 12 contests with London healthy, he averaged 4.4 receptions, 42.2 yards, and 0.16 touchdowns. The Falcons recently placed the franchise tag on Pitts, meaning his production will be inconsistent unless another injury to London occurs.</p>

<p>It's been less than a week since the flame for the Milan Cortina Olympics was extinguished, but we're already looking ahead to French Alps 2030, where Canada's men's hockey team will look to avenge its silver-medal finish.</p><p>Best-on-best play will return at the World Cup of Hockey in February 2028, but we're staying focused on the crown jewel of international puck: the Olympics.</p><p>So, which players will be a part of Team Canada four years from now? Below, we project the full 25-player roster. He'll be 42 for the next Olympics, and while he might still be playing, it seems more likely he'll be retired. Marchand, who will be 41 in 2030, was an easy omission. Bennett, Horvat, Reinhart, Stone, and Wilson will probably be past their primes. We thought long and hard about Hagel but simply couldn't find room for him.</p><p>Although Sennecke on the first line may be a surprise, we're seeking some balance. Canada was essentially a one-line team by the end of the 2026 Games. With this forward group, McDavid and MacKinnon can carry the first line, while Celebrini and Bedard can anchor the second one. Sennecke, a likely Calder Trophy finalist, has a sky-high ceiling. Don't sleep on Guenther either; he's on pace for nearly 40 goals in his age-22 season.</p><p>Byfield's size and speed could nicely complement a shutdown line with returnees Suzuki and Marner. The versatile and intelligent Johnston could slot anywhere in the lineup, and we ultimately placed him on the fourth line. We're banking on Fantilli's potential; the 2023 No. 3 pick could be one of the game's premier power forwards by 2030. Doughty, who will be 40 for the next Olympics, was an easy cut. The rest of our omissions from the 2026 roster will likely be past their primes, although we did consider bringing back Toews or Sanheim - they'll be 35 and 33, respectively, in 2030.</p><p>Makar and Harley are near locks to return. Morrissey was on our bubble, but we wanted one more veteran, and he could still be going strong in 2030 at age 34.</p><p>Schaefer is a lock. He had a case to make the 2026 team, even at 18 years old. Dobson has the length, mobility, and two-way game Hockey Canada typically covets. He and Harley could make a strong shutdown pair.</p><p>The rest of our selections admittedly require more imagination. If Bouchard can limit his backbreaking mistakes over the next four years, he'll be there. Power hasn't come into his own yet, but the 2021 No. 1 pick is just 23 years old. Even if he never reaches his offensive ceiling, he has the raw materials to become elite defensively in his 6-foot-6, 226-pound frame and above-average mobility.</p><p>Our final pick on defense is arguably our most controversial. Verhoeff is a surefire top-five pick in the 2026 NHL Draft and could even go first overall. The 6-foot-4, 212-pounder played well as an underager for Canada at the world juniors and is enjoying a superb freshman campaign at North Dakota. We also considered Landon DuPont, the projected 2027 No. 1 pick, but ultimately determined that was too much of a reach. He's a 5-foot-11 offensive defenseman - an archetype Canada typically steers clear of when selecting depth. Thompson feels like the safest bet to return, since he's enjoying another strong season and just turned 29.</p><p>Cossa is a true wild card considering he has just one NHL game under his belt. But the 23-year-old is having another exceptional year in the AHL and has all the tools to be a star in the NHL, thanks in part to his 6-foot-7, 220-pound frame. There's a reason the Red Wings drafted him 15th overall in 2021 - the highest pick spent on a Canadian goalie since Jonathan Bernier was drafted 11th overall in 2006.</p><p>Greaves is perhaps the opposite of Cossa: He went undrafted and is only 6 feet tall. At age 24, he's playing extremely well in his first full NHL season after shining as a call-up late in the 2024-25 campaign.</p>
