City's Gundogan: Liverpool deserve title if season is canceled

Manchester City midfielder Ilkay Gundogan said it would only be "fair" if Liverpool are awarded the Premier League title in the event the season is canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic.

"For me, that would be okay, yes," Gundogan conceded in an interview with German broadcaster ZDF, as translated by Reuters. "You have to be fair as a sportsperson."

The Reds, who are in search of their first top-flight domestic title in three decades, led City by 25 points when the Premier League halted play due to the contagion. They were just six points away from clinching the historic triumph.

The English football season is currently suspended until at least April 30, and with the COVID-19 crisis continuing to wreak havoc worldwide, it seems increasingly likely that the date will be pushed back further.

"There are different opinions," Gundogan said about whether the campaign should be finished at all. "For clubs who have had a very good season, it obviously wouldn't be nice if it was canceled now."

He added: "On the other hand, for clubs who aren't doing as well and are maybe in the relegation places, an abandonment would obviously suit them."
