Manchester United defender Lisandro Martinez apologized for his recent comments criticizing the Premier League club's hierarchy and director of football Jason Wilcox.

The club also fined the Argentina defender for his outburst after Manchester United's 2-0 defeat to Atletico Madrid in the Champions League on Tuesday, reports BBC Sport's Sami Mokbel.

Martinez met with United manager Michael Carrick and other club officials Thursday.

"It was a very positive conversation, where we were able to exchange views and speak openly about what happened after Tuesday's game," Martinez said in a statement.

"Everyone knows that I am a passionate person and that I live football with great intensity. The frustration of the defeat led me to express how I felt at a time and place that perhaps were not the right ones, and for that I want to apologize."

After Tuesday's loss, Martinez complained about the lack of investment in Manchester United's squad during last summer's transfer window.

He said he "expected more from our technical director" after a summer in which United spent €170 million on three new midfielders.

The 28-year-old later explained that "anger and frustration" led to his criticism of the club's board.

Manchester United's next Premier League game is Sunday against Leeds United at Elland Road.
