Virginia has pulled out of the ACC Tournament due to a positive COVID-19 test within the Cavaliers' program, the conference announced Friday.
The top-seeded Cavaliers (18-6) were scheduled to face Georgia Tech (16-8) in a semifinal matchup Friday night, but that game has been canceled.
"We went from an exhilarating game-winning shot to beat Syracuse to a gut punch regarding the positive COVID-19 test within our program," Virginia head coach Tony Bennett said in a statement. "I’m hurting for our players, especially our seniors. I told our young men they have every reason to be disappointed, but it is still very important how they choose to respond. We are exhausting all options to participate in the NCAA Tournament."
Georgia Tech will now advance to the ACC Tournament championship round and face either Florida State or North Carolina.
Virginia's status for March Madness, which begins in one week, is also in question. Teams must return seven consecutive days of negative COVID-19 tests to be eligible to participate in the tournament.
