Final Paris 2024 medal table: U.S. runs away with most medals, ties China in gold
The last medals have been awarded in Paris, and competition across 329 events is complete.
Before the eyes of the Olympic movement turn to Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo, Italy, hosts of the 2026 Winter Games, let's look back at the final medal table from Paris. As always, the table is ordered by the number of gold medals:
The United States won gold in women's basketball on Sunday, the final medal event in Paris, to tie China atop the gold-medal rankings.
The U.S.' 126 total medals can perhaps be considered a national high-water mark for a non-boycotted Olympics, topping the 121 medals won at Rio 2016.
American athletes won 174 total medals at Los Angeles 1984, a total significantly inflated by the boycott of 14 Eastern Bloc countries, including the Soviet Union and East Germany.
The U.S. also won 231 total medals at St. Louis 1904, but very few athletes outside of North America traveled to compete at the event, which is sometimes omitted in contemporary record-keeping.
Another country setting new highs is Canada, whose nine gold medals won in Paris are a national record for a non-boycotted Summer Games. Canada's 27 total medals also represent a new summer best.
Host nation France saw a significant bump, winning its most gold and total medals since the last time Paris hosted the Olympics in 1924.
