MONTREAL (AP) — Canadian teenager Victoria Mboko rallied to reach the National Bank Open final, beating ninth-seeded Elena Rybakina 1-6, 7-5, 7-6 (4) on Wednesday night.

The 18-year-old Mboko dropped to the court after Rybakina’s shot sailed long on match point as the crowd — lined with “Allez Vicky” — erupted. Mboko saved a match point in the third set and broke Rybakina twice to force the tiebreaker.

“Incredible match, thank you to everyone for supporting me,” Mboko told the crowd in French. “It was really difficult, but anything can happen.”

On Thursday night, she’ll face Japanese star Naomi Osaka, a 6-2, 7-6 (7) winner over 16th-seeded Clara Tauson of Denmark in the second semifinal.

Mboko, ranked 85th in the world, is seeking her first WTA Tour title and trying to join Faye Urban (1969) and Bianca Andreescu (2019) as the only Canadians to win the home event in the open era.

“Playing in front of the home crowd, obviously, has its advantages,” Mboko said. “You always have everyone pumping you up as much as they can. It really pulls me through in the tough moments where I’m maybe not as positive. Really blessed to have that kind of support.”

Born in Charlotte, North Carolina, to Congolese parents, Mboko grew up in Toronto. She upset top-seeded Coco Gauff 6-1, 6-4 on Saturday to reach the quarterfinals, then topped Jessica Bouzas Maneiro 6-4, 6-2 on Monday. At 2 hours, 46 minutes, the match Wednesday was the longest of Mboko’s short tour career.

From Kazakhstan, Rybakina won at Wimbledon in 2022. She has nine career WTA Tour victories, winning in May on clay at Strasbourg. Rybakina beat Mboko 6-3, 7-5 last month in Washington.

“I knew that she was a tough opponent,” Rybakina said. “She served really well in these important moments. It was a very close match, like a big fight. So it could go any way, but it went hers.”

Mboko overcame 11 double-faults and battled through a wrist injury after stumbling awkwardly to the ground in the second game of the third set. She'll will move up to at least 34th in the world after starting the year outside the top 300.

Mboko said her wrist felt “a lot better” after the match, but in the moment, the fall almost crushed her spirits.

“She was playing really great tennis on top of that, but I’m happy that I kept my composure,” Mboko said. “I was patient in the right moments. I just feel really happy that I was able to bounce back after being down, even a match point, I think.”

Osaka, the four-time Grand Slam champion who reached No. 1 in the world, continued her best performance in a WTA 1000 tournament since reaching the Miami final in 2022. She stepped for 15 months toward the end of that season and had daughter Shai in July 2023. She’s seeking her eighth title and her first since the 2021 Australian Open.

Bianca Andreescu will delay the start of her 2025 season after undergoing an appendectomy.

The 2019 U.S. Open champion said Thursday in an Instagram Story post that she had planned to compete in the Merida Open later this month until this complication arose.

“I unexpectedly started experiencing some sharp pain in my stomach, which led to an emergency appendectomy,” Andreescu said. “The surgery went smoothly, and I’m on the road to recovery. My plan is to be back on the court for the clay season, stronger than ever.”

The 24-year-old Andreescu has been limited by injuries the last couple of years. She missed nine months with a back issue before returning to action in May 2024. Her last tournament was the Pan Pacific Open in October.

NEW YORK (AP) — Two-time champion Naomi Osaka and fellow past U.S. Open winners Stan Wawrinka, Dominic Thiem and Bianca Andreescu were given wild cards Wednesday into this year's tournament.

Osaka won the first of her four Grand Slam titles at Flushing Meadows in 2018 and took the title again in 2020. But like the other past champions given wild cards by the U.S. Tennis Association, she has missed significant time in recent seasons and was not ranked highly enough to qualify directly for the tournament.

Osaka returned to the WTA Tour this season after giving birth last year to a daughter but is still searching for the form that led her to No. 1 in the rankings and made her one of the most dominant players on hard courts, having also won the Australian Open twice.

Osaka, who also left the tour for mental health reasons, lost in qualifying for this week's Cincinnati Open. She wrote afterward in an Instagram post that it was a strange feeling "missing balls that I shouldn't miss, hitting balls softer than I remember I used to."

Andreescu, a Canadian who beat Serena Williams for the 2019 U.S. Open title, missed nine months last year with a back injury before returning to tour at the French Open.

Thiem will get a chance to play a final Grand Slam tournament, having announced earlier this year he would retire following the season. The 30-year-old Austrian won his lone major title at the 2020 U.S. Open but has battled a wrist injury for much of the last three years.

Wawrinka, 39, won the 2016 U.S. Open for one of his three Grand Slam titles. Like Thiem, he rose as high as No. 3 in the ATP rankings but has fallen outside the top 100. He will be making his 72nd appearance in the main draw of a Grand Slam tournament, fifth all-time.

Americans Amanda Anisimova, McCartney Kessler, Alexa Noel and Iva Jovic also received wild cards into the women's main draw, along with Chloe Paquet of France and Taylah Preston of Australia.

Men to receive wild cards were Americans Chris Eubanks, Learner Tien, Zachary Svajda and Matthew Forbes, along with France’s Alexandre Muller and Australian Tristan Schoolkate.

The U.S. Open begins Aug. 26.

TORONTO (AP) — Bianca Andreescu's strong start turned into an early exit to her first hard-court tournament of the year, as the Canadian was beaten 0-6, 6-3, 6-4 by Lesia Tsurenko on Tuesday night at the National Bank Open.

Andreescu won her home tournament in her 2019 season that was highlighted later by the U.S. Open title. But she hadn't played on hard courts since Montreal last year, ending her season because of a back injury and not returning until this year's French Open.

Andreescu was coming off a second-round loss to eventual silver medalist Donna Vekic in the Olympics. She nearly rallied in the third set Tuesday after falling behind 5-0.

Tsurenko was joined in the second round by fellow Ukrainians Elina Svitolina and Marta Kostyuk. Svitolina, the 2017 tournament champion, beat American Shelby Rogers 6-0, 6-2, while No. 11-seeded Kostyuk ousted Tatjana Maria 6-0, 6-2.

But No. 16-seeded Dayana Yastremska, another player from Ukraine, was eliminated after she had to stop playing in her match against Taylor Townsend because of a shoulder injury while trailing 6-3, 3-1.

Anna Kalinskaya, the No. 10 seed, and No. 12 seed Victoria Azarenka also advanced.

NEW YORK (AP) — Bianca Andreescu, the 2019 U.S. Open champion, pulled out of the year's last Grand Slam tournament on Saturday because of an injury.

The U.S. Tennis Association announced Andreescu's withdrawal but did not specify the nature of the injury. She will be replaced in the women's singles bracket by a player who qualified for the field or lost in qualifying.

Andreescu was supposed to face Lesia Tsurenko in the first round.

Play begins Monday at Flushing Meadows.

Andreescu is a 23-year-old from Canada who has been ranked as high as No. 4 and is currently No. 51.

She won the U.S. Open as a teenager by beating Serena Williams in the final four years ago. That made Andreescu the first player to win the women's title in New York in her tournament debut.
