MUNICH (AP) — Bayern Munich is not allowing coach Vincent Kompany to be part of its plans for Saturday’s Klassiker against German rival Borussia Dortmund following his collapse and hospitalization last week.
Assistant coach Aaron Danks said on Friday there were orders not to discuss the game with Kompany, even though he’s out of hospital and recovering at home.
“We don’t talk to him about football. We’ve been given clear instructions there,” Danks said. “He needs to recover and spend time with his family. We’re not getting him involved so he can be fully back at it when he returns.”
Danks oversaw a 6-1 win over Magdeburg in the German Cup on Wednesday. Saturday’s game against Dortmund is likely to see Harry Kane return to action after winning the Ballon d’Or on Monday.
Danks said not much has changed in how Bayern is training for the game, adding that Kompany’s assistants aren’t “mini-Vinnies” but have skill sets which complement each other to work together in his absence.
Bayern board member for sport Max Eberl told German broadcaster ARD on Wednesday that Kompany was treated for meningeal irritation, which is an inflammation of the tissue around the brain or spinal cord.
Before his collapse, Kompany had also been struggling with a viral infection and a hip injury.
