Norris claims pole for Hungarian GP, McLaren takes front row
McLaren had a terrific qualifying session at the Hungaroring on Saturday.
Lando Norris claimed pole position for Sunday's Hungarian Grand Prix, while teammate Oscar Piastri finished second ahead of Red Bull's Max Verstappen.
It's Norris' third career pole and only the third time ever that McLaren has locked out the front row.
It was a rough day for Mercedes' George Russell, who starts Sunday's race from 17th position after he was unable to finish the Q1 session because of a lack of fuel. Russell has now failed to get out of Q1 in Hungary in consecutive seasons after claiming pole at the Hungaroring in 2022.
Sergio Perez's tumultuous season continued as the Red Bull driver hit the wall on the eighth turn during Q1, causing a red flag. Perez has crashed out of the first qualifying session in consecutive races.
The veteran racer, who signed a new contract with Red Bull through 2025, has been in awful form of late. His poor results have led to speculation surrounding his future with Red Bull.
Daniel Ricciardo, a candidate to take over Perez's seat should Red Bull decide to make a change, finished P1 following Saturday's first qualifying and will start in ninth position Sunday.
