Hays becomes 6th Orioles player to hit for cycle

Austin Hays became the sixth Baltimore Orioles player in franchise history to hit for the cycle on Wednesday, capping it off with a two-run double in the sixth inning against the Washington Nationals.

Hays is the first Orioles player since Jonathan Villar managed the feat in 2019. Felix Pie (2009), Aubrey Huff (2007), Cal Ripken Jr. (1984), and Brooks Robinson (1960) are the others.

The 26-year-old outfielder is the fourth hitter this year to hit for the cycle, joining Milwaukee Brewers star Christian Yelich, New York Mets infielder Eduardo Escobar, and Los Angeles Angels slugger Jared Walsh.

Through six innings of the Battle of the Beltways, Hays was 4-for-4 with three runs scored and a trio of RBIs. He led off the game with a single off Patrick Corbin and added a homer off the lefty in the third. Hays' fourth-inning triple was his first of the season and fifth of his career. He's the only of the four cycle hitters this season to manage the feat in four at-bats.

At the conclusion of the sixth, in which the Orioles scored four runs off Steve Cishek, the contest entered its second rain delay. The game never resumed and Baltimore won 7-0.
