The New York Mets placed catcher Francisco Alvarez on the 10-day injured list with a meniscus tear in his right knee.

Alvarez will undergo surgery to repair the tear, manager Carlos Mendoza said Wednesday. It's unclear exactly how long the 24-year-old will be sidelined.

"Once they go in there, we'll have a better understanding of what we're dealing here with," Mendoza told reporters when asked about Alvarez's recovery timeline. "Hopefully it's six-to-eight weeks."

Alvarez tweaked his knee during a foul swing in the sixth inning of Tuesday's 10-2 win over the Detroit Tigers. He tried to walk it off before leaving the field in the middle of his at-bat.

Alvarez is slashing .241/.317/.393 with four home runs in 128 plate appearances this season.

His injury is yet another blow to the Mets, who now have 13 players on the injured list amid a dreadful start to the season. Star shortstop Francisco Lindor hasn't played since suffering a calf injury April 22, while offseason additions Jorge Polanco and Luis Robert Jr. also haven't appeared since mid-April.

New York, which has collected only 16 wins through 41 games, sits in last place in the NL East.

Catcher Hayden Senger was recalled from Triple-A Syracuse in a corresponding roster move.
