The cost-conscious Tampa Bay Rays are the champions of the American League East for the first time in five seasons despite operating with one of MLB's lowest payrolls.
Tampa Bay clinched its first division title since 2021 on Tuesday after knocking off the New York Yankees 6-1 in the Bronx.

The milestone marks just the fifth time the Rays have won the AL East in their 29-year history. Tampa Bay is also the fourth different team in the last four seasons to win the division.
It's the first time the Rays have reached the playoffs in the last three seasons. The organization has failed to win a postseason round in its last three trips.
Tampa Bay currently ranks 28th in spending with a $110-million luxury-tax payroll, according to Roster Resource. Only the Cleveland Guardians and Miami Marlins are carrying a lower payroll.
In addition to claiming the division, Tampa Bay also clinched the No. 1 seed in the AL and locked the Yankees into the first wild-card spot. New York is expected to face the Boston Red Sox in the wild-card round, with the winner moving on to play the Rays in the ALDS. The Rays, Yankees, and Red Sox currently own the top three records in the AL.
Despite having their playoff seeding locked in, the Rays still have something to play for over their last five games. The club needs to finish 4-1 to win 100 games for just the second time in franchise history and could set the franchise's single-season mark for wins if it finishes 5-0. The 2021 team holds the record after going 100-62.
Tampa Bay closes its season with two more games against the Yankees before traveling to Philadelphia for three games with the Phillies. The Rays will open the ALDS at Tropicana Field on Saturday, Oct. 3.
