Joe Espada won't return as manager of the Houston Astros after his contract expires at the end of the month, the team announced Wednesday.
The Astros were swept by the Chicago White Sox in the American League wild-card round after winning the AL West with an 81-81 record. It was the first time in MLB history a division-winning club didn't have a winning record.
Following the postseason exit, Espada said he'd "absolutely" like to return as Houston's skipper.
Astros owner Jim Crane and Espada were set to discuss the latter's contract status.
"Jim has been very clear about his process and when he wants to have that conversation," Espada said last week. "I respect the process and how blessed I've been of being here for over nine years and experienced so many division titles, championship series, World Series, winning one. As a bench coach, as a manager, I have witnessed so many great moments, so obviously I would like to continue enjoying those moments."
The Seattle Mariners are reportedly interested in hiring Espada for their managerial vacancy, sources told MLB.com's Mark Feinsand.
Espada originally became Astros manager as a promotion from bench coach ahead of the 2024 campaign after Dusty Baker retired. In his three seasons leading Houston, Espada posted a 256-229 record with two division titles. The Astros failed to win a playoff game with Espada as manager (0-4).
The Astros are now in search of both a manager and general manager for next season after firing GM Dana Brown in August.
