Covington: Masvidal a 'broken man,' Burns will get 'easy win'

Colby Covington has minimal faith that rival Jorge Masvidal will get back on track in his next bout.

During a recent appearance on Michael Bisping's "Believe You Me" podcast, Covington predicted Gilbert Burns will easily defeat Masvidal at UFC 287 on April 8 in Miami.

"Jorge is a broken man," Covington said. "He's not the same fighter after I destroyed him and beat him 50-44 with a soda. Obviously, he's had emotional letdown, and his life is unravelling. ...

"You can tell he's just not the same person. I just see Gilbert getting an easy win."

Covington dominated Masvidal, his former training partner and friend, in a grudge match in March 2022.

UFC president Dana White announced earlier in March that Covington will get the next welterweight title shot against Leon Edwards, drawing complaints from other fighters in the division. Edwards said he was puzzled by the brass' decision, considering Covington hasn't fought in over a year. And Masvidal said last week that he expects to jump ahead of Covington in the title conversation with a win over Burns.

However, Covington believes an Edwards-Masvidal matchup would only take place after he dethrones the current champion.

"If Leon wants to fight Masvidal so bad, don't worry - he can go fight him on the prelims after I destroy him this summer," Covington said. "But he's not getting out of this ass-whooping."
