Report: Kyrie contacts LeBron in hopes of reuniting on Mavs
Mavericks guard Kyrie Irving reached out to Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James to see if he'd reunite with him in Dallas, sources told The Athletic's Shams Charania.
Irving is set to hit free agency and wants the Mavericks to trade for James in hopes of creating a Big Three alongside him and Luka Doncic, according to Bleacher Report's Chris Haynes.
James is mulling over his future after the Lakers' season ended in a third-round loss to the Denver Nuggets. The 38-year-old signed a two-year extension with L.A. last offseason, but he holds a player option for the 2024-25 campaign.
The Lakers have Anthony Davis, Jarred Vanderbilt, and Max Christie on guaranteed deals next season, while Mo Bamba's contract is partially guaranteed, and Malik Beasley's carries a team option, according to Spotrac.
Los Angles has a few key free agents, including Austin Reaves, Rui Hachimura, Dennis Schroder, and D'Angelo Russell.
The Mavericks traded for Irving in February after he requested a move from the Brooklyn Nets. The 31-year-old played in 20 games, and Dallas went 5-11 with him and Doncic in the lineup to miss the playoffs and play-in tournament. The franchise holds the 10th pick in June's draft.
Irving and James played together on the Cleveland Cavaliers from 2014-17, delivering the franchise its first championship.
