Canadian authorities open probe into ex-Raptor Porter

The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP)'s Investigation and Enforcement Bureau is opening a criminal probe into the betting incident involving former Toronto Raptors forward Jontay Porter, a spokesperson told ESPN's David Purdum.

The investigation was deemed warranted after an assessment was completed into betting irregularities for Raptors games on Jan. 26 and March 20. Four men were charged with wire fraud in New York in connection with prop bets placed on Porter for the same two contests. Porter, 24, has not been charged.

The OPP is aware of the probe in the United States and plans to connect with American authorities as the investigation continues.

Porter was banned by league commissioner Adam Silver in April after it was found that he violated the league's gaming rules by placing bets on NBA games through the betting account of an associate. The former Raptor also disclosed personal health information to a known bettor, who placed an $80,000 parlay on him to underperform in the March 20 contest for a $1.1-million payout.

Porter averaged 4.4 points, 3.2 rebounds, and 2.3 assists in 26 games with the Raptors this season.
