USF coach Amir Abdur-Rahim dies at 43
University of South Florida men's basketball head coach Amir Abdur-Rahim died Thursday at age 43, the school announced. He was undergoing a medical procedure at a Tampa-area hospital and died due to complications.
"All of us with South Florida athletics are grieving with the loved ones of coach Abdur-Rahim," vice president for athletics Michael Kelly said. "He was authentic, driven, and his infectious personality captivated all of Bulls Nation. Coach Abdur-Rahim leaves a lasting impact on our student-athletes, the university, and the community. We are supporting those closest to him, including his family, team, and athletics staff, to ensure they have the resources they need to deal with this tremendous loss."
Abdur-Rahim spent one season with the Bulls, helping guide the program to 25 wins and the school's first-ever ranking in the Associated Press poll. He won Coach of the Year for the American Athletic Conference.
Before his tenure with South Florida, Abdur-Rahim spent four seasons at Kennesaw State, leading the Owls to their lone March Madness appearance in 2023. He also spent time as an assistant coach at Murray State, Charleston, Texas A&M, and Georgia.
Abdur-Rahim was the younger brother of 13-year NBA veteran Shareef Abdur-Rahim.
