Georgia Tech fires coach Stoudamire
Georgia Tech is firing head coach Damon Stoudamire after three seasons, the school announced Sunday.
Stoudamire finishes his coaching tenure with a 42-55 record. He's owed $2.6 million over the next two years, but that number is subject to offset, Thamel adds.
"Georgia Tech men's basketball has a proud history and is an important part of our athletics department and community," vice president and director of athletics Ryan Alpert said in a statement when announcing the coaching change.
"We are committed to identifying an excellent basketball coach that will build a championship-level program, and fulfill our missions of academic excellence and preparing our student-athletes for life beyond basketball."
The Yellow Jackets went 11-20 in the regular season and ended the year on a 12-game losing streak after falling to Clemson on Saturday. They also finished last in the ACC with a 2-16 conference record.
Stoudamire was hired in 2023 after a three-year stint as an assistant on the Boston Celtics' coaching staff. He was the head coach at Pacific from 2016 to 2021, then made the jump to the NBA. Stoudamire won the NBA's Rookie of the Year award after being selected No. 7 overall by the Toronto Raptors in 1995.
Georgia Tech has not made the NCAA tournament since the 2020-21 season under Josh Pastner, which was also the last time the program posted a winning record.
