Temple fires Rod Carey after 3 seasons
"It's never an easy decision to replace a head coach," athletic director Arthur Johnson said in a statement. "The past two seasons have not been easy with the challenges of the pandemic."
Carey said, "I'm thankful to Temple University and the Temple community for my time here."
Assistant coach Thad Ward is the Owls' interim coach.
The Owls concluded the 2021 campaign with a 3-9 record after losing their regular-season finale to Navy. Carey leaves the school with a 12-20 record.
He led the Owls to an 8-5 mark in his debut season on the sideline, earning a bid to the Military Bowl in 2019. However, the Owls won just two American Athletic Conference games over the past two seasons.
The 50-year-old replaced former coach Geoff Collins, who accepted the same role with Georgia Tech. Manny Diaz was initially tabbed as Collins' successor before he abruptly left to become the coach at Miami.
Carey went 52-30 at Northern Illinois from 2012-18.
