Report: Belichick interviews for North Carolina job
Former New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick had a head coaching interview at North Carolina this week, according to Grant Hughes of Inside Carolina.
The school has discussed the job with Belichick, who has a genuine interest in the college game, sources told Sports Illustrated's Albert Breer and Pat Forde.
"He blew them away in the interview," a source told Andrew Carter of The News & Observer.
The Tar Heels have spoken with multiple candidates as they look for a replacement for Mack Brown, who they fired Nov. 26. The school's list reportedly includes Tulane head coach Jon Sumrall and Georgia defensive coordinator Glenn Schumann, among others.
The Patriots parted ways with Belichick after the 2023 NFL season, ending the legendary coach's stint after 24 years and six Super Bowl titles. The 72-year-old generated interest after becoming available and was a finalist for the Atlanta Falcons' job before the NFC South club hired Raheem Morris instead.
San Francisco head coach Kyle Shanahan also revealed that the 49ers offered Belichick a defensive coordinator job in the offseason, but the second-winningest head coach in NFL history declined. Belichick has said he plans on returning to coaching in 2025 despite not landing a top job this year.
Inarguably one of the greatest coaches of all time, Belichick started a media career in 2024 and became a regular guest on ESPN's "The Pat McAfee Show" and "Manningcast."
Belichick began his professional coaching career with the Baltimore Colts in 1975 and has never coached at the college level.
North Carolina posted a 6-6 record this season. Brown returned for a second stint with the Tar Heels in 2019 and went 44-32 over the last six seasons.
