Western Michigan tops BU for 1st Frozen Four title

Western Michigan defeated Boston University 6-2 Saturday night to win its first Frozen Four championship in program history.

The Broncos opened scoring 1:38 into the contest but quickly surrendered their lead. They were up 3-2 heading into the third period and used a trio of goals in the final frame to seal the momentous victory.

Owen Michaels, who scored the double-overtime winner in the semifinals, continued his clutch tournament with a two-goal performance. The sophomore scored a key insurance goal in the third period to put Western Michigan up 4-2, then added an empty-netter.

The Broncos were the fourth-ranked squad in the 16-team playoff bracket. They defeated Minnesota State, UMass, and Denver to reach the final.

Unranked Boston eliminated Ohio State, Cornell, and Penn State en route to the championship game.

The Terriers have won five national titles in their history, most recently in 2009.
